Not born a samurai one of the few main members not from a samurai background .From Toba/Fushimi we see this guy pursuing a one man war against Satsuma and Choshu all the way to his death trying to save some of his men pinned down by gunfire .The book" Kinse Shiriaku "shows Hijikata all over northern Japan conducting guerrilla raids and even involved in a sea battle as well as building an army some 2000 strong .One of his men captured at Goryokaku states" Hijikata was braver than most real samurai ".Even Hillsbourough not a Shinsengumi fan at all is full of admiration for Hijikata so can we call him "The Last Samurai "?

Well, Saigo Takamori did have his rebellion about 10 years after Toshizo's death, so would that then qualify Saigo as the saigo no samurai? (no pun intended)

Well maybe Hijikata was the last lone wolf (pun intended). This is to say that Saigo was of some stature, however Hijikata was a simple samurai who did some amazing things. So I guess its depends on if you bring the whole status and class thing into it.

IMO, Saigo was one of persons who ended "Buke Shakai" (Samurai society)
So I don't want to see him as a Samurai after the Meiji Restoration.

I think Samurai in Satsuma, Choshu, Tosa were more like politicians than Bushi.

But Saigo created the first modern war in Japan ,his heroes were George Washington and Napoleon ,Where ol Hij was a total die hard ,but than again there is Eto Shimpei and his 1875 Shinto uprising where they only used swords and swore off all things modern .
