shikisoku,

On one of your Shinsengumi articles you list an ironclad they tried to board as the "Koutetsu kan." Where did you find this name? All my sources show it as koutetsu without the -kan.

"Kan" is a suffix - I am at work and can't even see kanji with this computer, but from memory it is attached to things like submarines and combat ships.

I haven't seen the article, but isn't 艦 (kan) a suffix for warships?

kitsuno,

True enough. However I am curious if the ship was just called koutetsu-kan in the years prior to being re-named Azuma.

Kan is 艦(warship)
So you can call The warship Koutetsu.

Koutetsu-kan is just pronoun of Ironclad ships but the ship(FKA Stonewall) was commonly called Koutetsu-kan in those days.

shikisoku,

Were other warships of that time commonly called _____-kan or was it just for the Koutetsu because of the translation of the name?

shikisoku,

Many thanks. There is a book listed on the Koutetsu/Azuma Japanese wiki page. I do not know much about Japanese publishing houses so can you tell me if 新人物往来社 is a respectable academic publishing house?
The book is 『軍艦「甲鉄」始末』by 中村彰彦 ISBN: 4404032889.

I have some books published by Shin Jinbutsu Shuraisha, so I think (hope) so.

kitsuno,

Groovy. I might have to order that one then and hammer away at some translating.

shikisoku,

Thank you for the clarification. I will have to get this book with my next paycheck and get hammering on what will be a very slow translation process.
