Being a notorious, *quack-pot*, Serizawa’s antics were getting more bizarre and more unruly. He set fire to the storehouse of a silk merchant who refused to pay him a bribe and then ordered members of the Shinsengumi to kill any member of the fire brigade who attempted to put it out. As a result of Serizawa’s actions, several other neighboring buildings/houses also caught fire. This was the last item in a long run of bad behavior that ran contrary to the mission of the Shinsengumi, which was to keep order in Kyoto. Continued bad behavior by Serizawa was starting to put the entire Shinsengumi in a bad light and it was believed that unless he was stopped, Serizawa’s actions would call into question the need for the Shinsengumi’s services. So, Kondo and Hijikata conferred with Matsudaira Katamori, who also had grown very wary of Serizawa’s antics, and he gave permission to the boys from Tama to tap into their propensity to kill off their own and do away with Serizawa—which they did, again, with *extreme prejudice*.

I myself have seen the room where Serizawa was assassinated at the old Yagi family residence and even saw the box Serizawa tripped over in his drunken stupor to escape/fight back against his brotherly assassins. Once the drunkard tripped and fell over the box, it was all over for him. I was amazed at the number of katana kizu (sword scars) on the walls and woodwork. It looks like Serizawa, even though he was totally wasted, managed to put up some sort of fight. Also, the amount of scars from the sword play shows how difficult fighting in a cramped, in-doors environment must have been. It was also kind of eerie sitting down in the spot where poor O-ume was killed as she slept. O-ume was a woman who became yet another lover of Serizawa’s –after he raped her. She was the wife of a merchant sent to collect a debt from Serizawa. Being his generous and jovial self, he decided to pay his debt by infecting the poor woman with syphilis against her will. Either she, like another before her, became enraptured with Serizawa after the rape:yuck:, or too ashamed to return to her husband, became his lover and died a very tragic death.

From the home office in Mibu, Kyoto, the top 10 reasons why Serizawa Kamo was assassinated are:

10. Kondo was jealous of Serizawa’s ability to get all the babes
9. It drove Hijikata nuts that Nishiki Shinmi would start to drool with lust when Serizawa would strut around the practice hall topless and not when Hijikata did the same.
8. The gang got tired of listening to Serizawa sing “Rubber Ducky” at bath time.
7. He wouldn’t let others from outside his clique roast marshmallows at his bonfires.
6. He stole Saito Hajime’s underwear and the stealing of under garments was a capital offense under Shinsengumi rules.
5. Nagakura and Okita kept complaining that Serizawa was groping them inappropriately
4. He had a night-time flatulence problem that kept others from getting a good night’s sleep
3. He carried an annoying little yellow ducky squeaky toy everywhere he went, and the toy’s squeaks were putting other members in danger when out on patrol.
2. He did it with Katamori Matsudaira’s favorite page, Ina Aso.
1. He was a real quaker!

I think Aizu requested assassination of Serizawa to Kondo and Hijikata.

Shikisoku, you are right, but let's analyze it a bit further. Of course Kondo and Hijikata wanted Serizawa dead. They probably complained to Matsudaira Katamori about Serizawa's actions and behavior and may have even suggested that drastic action is needed, hinting that they wanted him dead. But remember, they were ronin of peasant backgrounds and Serizawa was a blue-blooded samurai. In order to be exonerated, or get away with this murder, they would need permission from Katamori. As the head of Aizu and Protector of Kyoto, Katamori had the legal authority to order the hit, to make it legit (sounds like an MC Hammer song). So, yes, Matsudaira Katamori ordered the hit, answering the prayers of Kondo, Hijikata, other Shinsengumi members, many Aizu samurai and most of the populace of Kyoto.
