I have to say, I don't really see the issue with the tomato or plastic bottle. Before I could really 'cut', I could cut those. Just to check, I tried cutting a cucumber with a mogito (non-sharp sword) and it wasn't an issue.

Also, the bamboo looks cool, but when is it being cut? I've cut new bamboo (nice, green--over 10' tall) with a knife in one stroke without a problem. New bamboo is extremely easy to cut. This isn't to say it can't be fun, but it isn't really 'tameshigiri'. There's nothing being tested that I can tell.

The Ono-ha Itto Ryu is very interesting, but I didn't see the tameshigiri--did I miss it.

Here's some tameshigiri:

Nakamura Taizaburo:

when he was older:

Here's one by sword smith Anthony DiCristofano (Sukemitsu):

Do a google search on 'tameshigiri'. There are some good things out there and a lot of ugly. Some of the rolled mats that people use in America aren't necessarily that difficult to cut, either, so take some of the fancier stuff with a grain of salt. It is amazing the difference between a beach mat. A special made goza omote, and a used goza omote can be. I have yet to be able to try actual wara, as we usually don't get the chance.

I actually want someone to test weapons on the same
dummys they use to test wounds and animal bites on. (They can be seen on a discovery special about Shark Bites) It has skin flesh and bone with the same consitency as the human body, making it more accurate than ballistics gelatin.
