Well, it's that time of the year again. I'm interested in feedback for the past three years in regards to the contest - what works, and what doesn't as far as judging and rules go, and also interested in if people want an entrance fee or not this year - this time around I'm leaning towards no entry fee, but that also would mean no cash prize. I may come up with a first place prize out of my own pocket though, although it would be more likely to be some sort of object rather than cash.

I would join the contest whether or not there is a fee. I do like the idea of the fees being donated for the prize.

Though I'd rather see the money prizes divided (not equally, but in proportion) between the first three winners.

Or else: if there is no fee, gifts from the SA Archives Gift Shop could be awarded. I still have my "Ronin Coffee" mug from when I got 2nd place in 2006. Very Happy

At any rate, when do we send in entries? Smile

I'm guessing last year's first and second place winners who pulled in something around $160 would disagree - but I don't feel like keeping track of cash, and I have to wonder if no fee would entice more people. Frankly, it probably won't make a difference, but I'm pretty sure there will be no fee this year. I have a 3 day weekend coming up, so I'll start working on the details then.

To my mind, a fee is just one more hurdle to jump through. Therefore, it is one more potential obstacle to keep me from signing up. It isn't that the money would deter me, just that it would be one more piece of red tape to work through.

Well, unless the fee or lack thereof is the deciding factor for a person in deciding whether or not to enter, that line of thought is somewhat invalid Just Kidding

I'd like to get at least 8-10 entries, and I sort of doubt a fee or lack thereof is going to make an appreciable difference since people in general are lazy creatures, but I'll can the fee this year and see what happens.

OK - The Fiction Contest will go on as planned, with no entry fee. The deadline for entries will be May 1st. Stay tuned for details, and tell your friends.

Because of my job and my upcoming trip to Japan, I'm not going to be able to do anything with the contest until the end of this month - so for anyone who wants a headstart, there is not fee to submit and entry, and the genres are wide open. Due date will be moved forward accordingly, probably to June.

Exciting... Sorry I must have missed information about this but you could you kindly point me to the contest details for previous years to get an idea what to expect?

I'll be submitting certainly.

There are posts from the last year or two here, just put "fiction contest" into the google box at the bottom of the forum front page, and they should come up. There is a website that I haven't taken down yet, but I don't remember the URL. It should be in one of those threads though. The Yahoo group's archive will also have info on the old ones if you do a search.

I'll definately try and submit something this year. I was struggling to come up with a plot, so I hit 'random page' on the wiki and came up with Amano Yasukage. Hmmm...

With no entry fee this year, the submitted pieces should be more intriguing to read. I anticipate stiff competition this year.

There should be a "snail mail" address to send your story to. Or else, once you finish your story, send a PM to Kitsuno and he'll tell you where to send it. Very Happy

Not for the fiction contest. I'm definitely not retyping something just so someone can submit it.

As for arthursama - what DO you use?

Even if your computer doesn't have Word, it should have Wordpad or Notepad. You should should be able to put together a story on that.

If you don't have any word processors at all, then type your story, take it to a local Kinko's and have them scan the story onto a floppy disk. You can download it from your floppy disk. Then you can put it on word pad or note pad; just about every computer has this feature and you can find it by clicking on "start" and then "program" and then on "accessories."

However, if I were you, I would invest in a copy of Word. It's available at any computer store and it isn't that expensive.
