Yes, it was practiced openly.
"Shuriken" are, at their most basic, small, straight throwing knives. I'm trying to remember the oldest reference to them--I thought it was early Edo in a fight. The one combatant used a shuriken to stick his opponent's hakama to the floor, giving him the advantage.
Bugei Ryuha Daijiten mentions ryuha known for the practice of shuriken.
It does *not* refer to the ability to throw anything.

Yes, that's what I meant--there were schools that claim a transmission of shurikenjutsu.

An excellent resource site in English.
Also, one of Di Skoss' Koryu books contains an interview with the headmaster of a dedicated shuriken ryuha.

Shurikenjutsu was an auxililliary discipline in many ryuha. A good number of koryu ryuha have or had shurikenjutsu in their syllabi.
Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-ryu, Tatsumi-ryu, Takenouchi-ryu and other sogo bujutsu ryuha still have this discipline and train it regularly. _________________ Regards,
