The two disc DVD is a must. The interviews with George Lucus, Daisuke Ryu, and Masayuki Yui were first rate. As for Nobunaga, the only other one I can think of is the actor in Toshiie to Matsu.

That's the guy. Smile

Good call-he was fantastic. Domer almost ruined the image for me by posting about his role as a motorcycle riding high school teacher in some other series.

Why does everyone like Daisuke's Nobunaga? He had one word for a line in the entire movie ("Amen!!") and had about 2 minutes of screentime...

Daisuke Ryu looked like real thing. Should have won an Oscar just for that alone. I have not seen anyone better in my opinion.

I agree that he looked like him, but an actor's gotta act like him.

And his armour looked cheesy as hell, too. Wink

Not in the international version. He had a LOT more screen time.

And his "Atsumori" was kick-ass, too. Wink

I think what sold Daisuke as Nobunaga for me was his presence. He may not have had many lines, but the way he carried himself did it for me. Daisuke exuded confidence and power the way I felt Nobunaga might have. Daisuke also nailed down the unpredictable nature of Nobunaga especially with his loud outbursts of laughter. It seemed that only Ranmaru knew what his next move was and everyone else was on pins and needles trying to make sure not to insult the man. He nailed the prefect mix of strength and power along with fear and ambition. The atmosphere and tension that was created in all the Nobunaga scenes impressed me quite a bit. I'm not sure if the outstanding performance should be credited to Daisuke for the acting or Kurosawa for the screenplay/directing, but either way they got it right through and through in my opinion.

Apparently I haven't seen the 'international' version. in the one I saw, he had a single line and less than 2 minutes on screen.

Definitely make sure you rent the version that contains the "Pulp Nobunaga Fiction" scenes with that were especially edited by QT. See the attached link.

I offer the Shakespearean version -- just as bloody, but much classier. Wink

Quote:
Julius: Your pardon; did I break thy concentration?
Continue! Ah, but now thy tongue is still.
Allow me, then, to offer a retort.
Describe Marsellus Wallace to me, pray.

Brett: What?

Julius: What country dost thou hail from?

Brett: What?

Julius: Thou sayest thou dost hail from distant What!
I know but naught of thy strange country What.
What language speak they in the land of What?

Brett: What?

Julius: English, base knave, dost thou speak it?

Brett: Aye!

Julius: Then hearken to my words and answer them!
Describe to me Marsellus Wallace!

Brett: What?

(JULIUS presses his knife to BRETT's throat)

Julius: Speak 'What' again! Thou cur, cry 'What' again!
I dare thee utter 'What' again but once!
I dare thee twice and spit upon thy name!
Now, paint for me a portraiture in words,
If thou hast any in thy head but 'What',
Of Marsellus Wallace!

Brett: He is dark.

Julius: Aye, and what more?

Brett: His head is shaven bald.

Julius: Hath he the semblance of a harlot?

Brett: What?

(JULIUS strikes with his blade and BRETT cries out)

Julius: Hath he the semblance of a harlot?

Brett: Nay!

Julius: Then why didst thou attempt to bed him thus?

Brett: I did not!

Julius: Aye, thou didst! O, aye, thou didst!
Thou sought to rape him like a chattel whore!
And sooth, Lord Wallace is displeased to bed
With aught save Lady Wallace, whom he wed.

(Pretty much the whole movie has been "Shakespeareized" -- and it's a hoot. http://pulpbard.wikispaces.com/Table+of+Contents )

Damn, that's good. Laughing, but I'm partial to Pulp Nobunaga Fiction as there was a whole lot of my special magic behind that little romp. I just sold the rights to QT. Wink
