Those audio feeds are kind of neat (although obviously they butcher Japanese words).

9/06/08 Why Kawanakajima? Shingen and Kenshin's Five Battles - By Kitsuno - (Audio Podcast)

This week I decided to tackle the reasons why Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin fought 5 battles all in the same place - Kawanakajima. I look forward to any comments or disagreements with my logic. Feel free to post here or comment directly on the blog.

I commented directly on the blog. Wink However, I am starting to think that if it turns into a full-blown discussion on the blog site, you might want to move it into the Kamakura-Sengoku forum.

Well, this thread is reserved for blog-related discussion, but if anyone else actually responds...

I don't see a mountain-pass ambush by Kenshin of Shingen as a bad/illogical thing. If Shingen was moving North with the intent to invade Echigo, an ambush would have made more sense than pitched battle on an open field. That's just my thinking though, without looking at Google Map's satellite view Just Kidding

Hey, that would be fun to play on that new mod of Shogun Total War that Seijitai and his crew are working on! Very Happy But my point is that if you are Kenshin and you want to keep Shingen as far away from Kasugayama as possible, you are going to want to meet him head on at a place that will geographically allow units to utilize their mobility to their full extent to decisively destroy or strongly deter the Takeda. Uesugi wasn't a defensive type of general, content to sit behind his mountains and try to bottle up the passes should Shingen dare to even so much spit in his direction. The best defense for Echigo, in Shingen's mind, was offense and the reinstatement of his Murakami pit-bull. Murakami was indeed a tenacious fighter!

The problem is, if you are Kenshin and you do decide to set an ambush in the mountains at the Sekida Pass, what would happen if you lost that engagement? It would have left Echigo open to invasion, as their wouldn't be much to stop the Takeda after that. Ditto on the pass in the Togakushi area which lies between Kurohimeyama and Iizunayama. Turnbull, to give the guy full credit, rightly points out that the Kawanakajima battles, were really for control of these strategic passes. Control of these passes was vital to the defense of Echigo.

9/14/08 - Shadowboxing: Kagemusha or the Real Deal? Kenshin Vs. Shingen - Kitsuno

Did Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen actually engage in personal combat during the 4th battle of kawanakajima? Based on some old translations and a couple books I had lying around, probably not - although my library is lacking in that I don't have Terje Solum's "Saga of the Samurai" on the takeda clan.

Terje hasn't made it that far yet. Book #4 ends with the third battle of Kawanakajima. I don't know what the delay is in getting book #5 out.Sad

BTW- There's a 50% chance that I'll be going to Kawanakajima TODAY! If I make it there as well as the museum in Nagano City , I'll chip in an opinion. It depends on the weather and if sleeping beauty ever wakes up. Rolling Eyes In the meantime, I'll check out what the good doctor T has to say on this as well as Rekishi Gunzou.
