One thing I’ve always wanted to do is attend a biwa recital of the Heike Monogatari. While obviously the supply of blind monks strolling the streets of Kyoto performing the story is probably quite diminished, one would assume there has to be SOMEBODY in Japan still carrying on the tradition. Has anyone ever attended one of these recitals (or for that matter, heard of one)?

I haven't attended one, but there is the occasional recital. I'll have to keep on the look-out! There was something about "preserving the tradition" in the Daily Yomiuri (or so I believe) some time ago, but it must be in the archived section as I can't find anything via Google. You need to register to search the archives.

By the way, here's a link to a performance on YouTube. Additional links can be found there.

Something on Youtube that's NOT high school kids getting into fights or pirated video? That's a rarity!
Thanks for the link.

I have a CD recording that includes "Atsumori" from the Heiki Monogatari. I purchased it from Amazon.com. The name of the CD is BIWA: JAPANESE TRADITIONAL MUSIC. I believe that, if you do a search on "biwa" in the CD section, you will find this (or another CD). I realize that this won't substitute for an actual live performance, but at least you can hear the recitation.

If you find one and want somebody to go with, lemme know!

Most certainly will do! How about talking about it tonight at Rasoi? I'll be in that area this evening. PM me and let me know if you can manage to swing by. Very Happy

Thanks-I'll look into getting one.

Uehara Mari recorded a terrific version of Heike Monogatari for Japan Victor in 1997. I got my copy at Yamano Records in Ginza. Her dramatic interpretation is similar to the one heard in the Hoichi part of Kwaidan. Don't know if she performs it live, though.
