Keanu Reeves to lead '47 Ronin'
Chris Morgan to write Universal feature
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117997052.html?categoryid=13&cs=1&nid=2562

I just read the news on Yahoo Japan.
http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20081210-00000002-vari-ent
Is it really the 47 Ronin movie or an European style fantasy movie (like lord of the ring) motived the 47 Ronin?

Well. the story is pretty much fantasy to begin with. But an Americanized version (probably using Chinese wuxia actors to play the lower ranked ronin with someone like George Clooney as Oishi, Christopher Lee as Kira, and Tom Cruise-tadaaaaa!-as Asano) would have to rank as the worst Japanese related historical film ever.

Well, I'll watch it. The idea sounds cool, foundation in Japanese history totally aside. After all, The Last Samurai was a good movie, just not such a great (or, really bad) documentary on Japanese history.

As long as Keanu doesn't speak, it could turn out ok... Laughing

Actually, I can see him playing a clueless young lord Asano. (That would have the benefit of also getting him offscreen early.)

"Woah, Kira like... LIED to me. Woah. Uncool. I'm gonna have to do... something."

In that case, Alex Winter would have to play Oishi.

"Seppuku? Bogus, dude!"

If that took this approach, I'd watch it...and love it!

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Razz Just Kidding

And actually, I'll have to check this out. Though like most Hollywood takes on Japanese history, it will likely be a disaster. Confused

I'm always torn about stuff like this. On the one hand, many of us want the 'mainstream' to pick up on our obsession; to fall in love with Japanese history, and thus support it financially. On the other hand, we don't like what that means, e.g. TLS. The same thing happens to medievalists fairly regularly. And how about what paleontologists must have thought of Jurassic Park and the like? It is also the reason there are so many 'ninjer' schools out there, or why many Tae Kwon Do places used to advertise themselves as 'karate'.

In the end, though, it will probably be good for the industry of Japanese history, even if we cringe our way through it.

I like the fact that the original article points out the fact that Reeves is half-Asian. He's totally qualified for this role!

Yes, Half Chinese/Hawaiian. Perfect for a Japanese movie. He is a league ahead of Cruise though. John

Yep, I expect those history factories will start filling up pretty quick. Wink

I just hope I can get control of some good low-cost labor in Thailand to start crunching out Japanese history. I've realized there isn't quite enough of it, so I figured we could fit another couple of eras in, maybe come up with a new franchise--the 'Minamoto' and 'Tokugawa' lines continue to be popular, and you can always get some mileage out of 'Fujiwara', but maybe something new. We're thinking of buying up Clavell's work from the Fiction conglomerates and moving it straight into our own line. Might see about doing the same with TLS, considering it was such a success...

Kira (Played by Jimmy Smitts )and his cronies are lounging outside a swank La niteclub ,
It is some 18 months since Kira tricked Asano into overdosing on Heroin after Asano messed up a red carpet event .
Cue bus driving by Nightclub (big bus to get all 47 in ....but than again its a double decker )
Reeves decked out in his button downs and chino's with blue bandana round forehead shouts out" ok carbron its time to die !" "eh homie i tol you i wuz gonna get ya pendeho !"
at this point machine pistols blaze from the lower deck and assault rifles and hand grenades from the top .
Kira is later found hiding in a liquor store clutching a 40oz of Colt 45 .

Me too.
He looks too young to play Oishi Kuranosuke.

It could go either way of either being good or bad. GUess we'll just have to wait and see. Besides it may get more people interested in the 47 Ronin story and they will search and find the classics.
