As many of you might know, Edward S. Morse was one of the chief movers and shakers in bringing Japanese art to prominence in the US. In particular, his huge collection of ceramics, now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and his writings about ceramics, represent very important first steps in American understandings of and appreciation for Japanese ceramics.

However, I am currently reading an (admittedly outdated - 1986) article which mentions "...the generally low estimation in which Morse's own vast collection of pottery is held today...".

I know this is a rather obscure topic, but I wonder if anyone might happen to be familiar with this. This is the first I'm hearing that the Morse collection is or was held in low esteem... I thought it remained one of the preeminent collections of Japanese pottery in the West and was something of a treasure...
