Man, I'm sick of hearing about Gackt (some androgynous male singer). I have a Google alert for "nemuri kyoshiro" and I've gotten so many lately pertaining to this dude. Where's Rolly when you need him?

Just Kidding

Am I the only one who twitches when seeing "Kyoshiro Nemuri" as if it's a Western name?

It's "Nemuri Kyoshiro." Kyoshiro is a name. Nemuri is a nickname. It's Nemuri Kyoshiro. That has meaning (in Japanese; "sleepy Kyoshiro"). Kyoshiro Nemuri does not.

Sorry, but this is one of my buttons. Cool

Nope.
Maybe, when they market it in the US (not likely), they should just call it "Sleepy Kyoshiro." That might clear up some confusion. But this is one of those iconic names that just sounds wrong flipped around, even if I didn't know what it meant. Just like I twitch when I see "Sazen Tange." And, for a long time, even in youth, I heard the name "Oda Nobunaga" for so long that it sounds funny to have someone say it in the Western way. "Nobunaga Oda" sounds wrong to me and has since I first heard of him, probably pre-high school. (Back then, however, I just thought that Oda was his first name and Nobunaga his last).

I agree. It just sounds wrong. In the news recently there was a story about Japanese figure skater Nobunari Oda who is a descendant of Nobunaga. I want to call the skater Oda Nobunari. It just sounds right.

The whole series is called the "Sleepy Eyes of Death" for the English market, I think. John

I always liked this series, ignoring the Black Mass ridiculous plot line. What I like about the Kyoshiro character was his uncompromising attitude and hatred for hypocrisy. It is just entertainment after all. I don't follow the pop culture in Japan, but, am aware of it having seen shows and performances in Ueno. There seems to be no mid-level to it being on the edge of hysteria at times. My grand children had had a brief spell of what I understand to be called 'Emo'. Teen age angst on barbiturates as far as I'm concerned. Gackt is pandering to this audience, yes? I understand how he could be disliked for this 'poseur', but, can he act? John

Who knows? Maybe they did drop the Black Mass stuff; after all, Gackt's hair is black, not red. Of course, he's wearing a leather jacket and boots too; I can't expect too much, can I? At first, when I saw those pictures, I thought they were following the trend of switching the hero's gender as they did in "Ichi." I'd actually be amused to see a woman done up with hair all ratty, wiping her nose and scratching herself constantly in a gender-flipped remake of "Yojimbo."

Oh yeah, what kind of name is "Gackt" anyway? Sounds like the noise rednecks make just before they spit a chaw. Laughing

To be honest, Mr. Bryant's reaction is so perfect that I have to copy what he posted...

The perfect summation of how I feel on this.

May I just remind everyone that so many people people complained about Gackt when it was announced that he was going to play Uesugi Kenshin in the "Furin Kazan" NHK taiga from a couple of years ago. Yes? And how many of those people turned out to be quite impressed with his performance? Hmmmm. Many, including me. I was quite surprised with the quality of Gackt's performance.

I'm going to break ranks with all of you so far and say, yes, Gackt can pull of playing Nemuri Kyoshiro. His Kenshin was cold, aloof, dangerous and credible (forgetting the hair)-- the same traits you'd want anybody who plays Nemuri Kyoshiro to radiate-- whether on the stage, small screen or silver screen. And besides, Ichikawa Raizo, who was brilliant as Nemuri, wasn't the most masculine-looking male lead to grace Japan's celluloid screen, was he?

Gackt is a guy. Every time I look at him all I can think of is the super androgynous spell that David Bowie went through. I half expect Gackt to start singing Dance Magic Dance with muppets shaking and gyrating around in the background.

Ok, that's a fair point. I had the same reaction when he was announced for the Kenshin role. But all the same, you have to admit that his FuuRinKaZan role was seemingly written for him. It seems to me that he didn't play Kenshin so much as writers wrote the character of Kenshin to fit Gackt's persona.

That may be completely incorrect of course and may not be the case, but it sure came off that way to me. Never the less it did not detract from the series which I thought was very good.

Still, I think my real objection is that I'd prefer to be immersed into the character, to somehow believe the person on my screen really could be that character. Gackt is just so far out there, that I don't believe that will ever happen in a period piece. It's the Tom Cruise effect. No matter how good the movie is, your not watching a character, your always watching Tom Cruise play a character.

I'll give Mr. Gackt a chance. But I stand by my comment until proven wrong.

I am in the Obenjo camp on this one i think he will pull it off .
I gagged when he was tagged as Kenshin in the 07 Taiga but he pulled it off ,he has the arrogance and requisite sneer with a touch of derangement to make a great Nemuri and could you ever find a worse Nemuri the the namby pamby sanitized version depicted by Masakazu Tamura .

After Tamura the only way to go is back up ,we did have a scare a few years back when Watari Tatsuya was mooted to play the sleepy one and thankfully that never happened.

The man claims to only eat carbohydrates once a year (his yearly bowl of ramen). He also claims that he hasn't touched rice for ten years, making him the man with the most will power in all of Japan.

I am with maliciousmisery on this one. The man's got character.

...slightly androgynous character.

I assume you're kidding. If you are unfamiliar with the Nemuri Kyoshiro (Sleepy Eyes of Death) series, you really owe it to yourself to see one.
