This is the best place I could think to post this question as, if I knew the correct era to post it in, I would already know the answer.

On the JAANUS site they say that "en and engawa were interchangeable terms, but engawa now usually refers to a veranda that is either partly inside the building with sliding doors protecting it from rain, or a completely exposed veranda."
http://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/e/engawa.htm

My question is: does anyone happen to know up to what time 縁 and 縁側 were used interchangeably?

Thanks!

Ummmmmmmm.... er.....

Damn.

That would require more digging than I have time to do right now, I'm afraid.

Yeah, sorry.
I just emailed JAANUS directly, we'll see what (if any) kind of response I get.
In the meantime I suppose simply using en is safest.
