Can any of you experts help me with pictures (preferably from different angles (front, sides, back, up) ) of the real kabuto from :
Toyotomi Hideyoshi (the one with long sun rays)
Kato Kiyomasa (long black one)
and if anyone would know in which museum they can be seen ?
Maybe one of you has it in a book and make a scan for me ?
I will be very grateful for your help, as always !
Many Thanks
Danny

Away from my sources now.

Maybe Emmanuel can help you.

Or Google "Jo Anseew". It has a great site with pics
taken from many different angles of items from the top japanese museums. Books usually have just a couple pics for each item.

Kato Kiyomasa had more than one style of his famous 'courtcap on steroids' kabuto. Scroll down to the '12th' picture to see side-view of one version and a close-up of his helmet crest which shows the same writing that appears on his banners.

The third photo, upper row - shows his more famous one here:

I was told that Hideyoshi's helmet does not depict sun rays, that it depicted bullrush:

A photo of the back of the kabuto is rare. Continuing to look.

Doyusha has an accurate model of the kabuto:

From Jo Anseeuw's gallery, side-view of the replica:

Emmanuel, as everybody on the forum often says: you are amazing !
Did you make any paintings/illustrations yet of Kiyomasa and/or Toyotomi ? I really admire your works !!
Did I read it correctly that the kabuto of Toyotomi (bullrush) is 'lost' and only a replica exists ? If so, how could they make an exact copy of it, knowing exactly how tall the bullrush should be ?
The samurai store.com has a replica of Kiyomasa, but I was wondering if the crest (maedate) on the kabuto is entirely correct ? see
http://www.samurai-store.com/armor/L030.html
Regarding the back of the Toyotomi-kabuto and the ushiro date, I only found this link demonstrating how to make the kabuto as miniature:
http://www.onesixthwarriors.com/forum/sixth-scale-action-figure-news-reviews-discussion/87305-toyotomi-hideyoshis-kabuto-hs-wip.html Would that come close to the real kabuto ? Maybe you can find better stuff ?
Would you mind if I send you a private forum message in the near future ? I need to show you something.

Again many thanks for all your help !
Danny

Hey Danny,

I do not know the history of the replica of Hideyoshi's famous kabuto. I have come across Edo period kabuto copying Hideyoshi's bullrush helmet. I am working on a sculpture of a mounted Toyotomi Hideyoshi wearing the helmet.

As for Kato Kiyomasa, I am working on a painting of him leading his troops, cutting deep into the ranks of the Koreans at the Battle of the Imjin River. I am also working on a sketch for a sculpture of Kiyomasa dueling with a Korean Tiger.

The maedate on the replica of Kiyomasa's armour does not appear in any of my books so I can't say if that one is accurate.

On my workbench is the Red Devil I did for Fort Duquesne Miniatures many years ago. I am slowly taking my time, enjoying resculpting almost the entire figure. By the time I finish it won't resemble the figure I originally did for Fort Duquesne.

I am unable to get the link you provided on the Hideyoshi kabuto miniature. You can PM me anytime.

Emmanuel
