Hi everyone,
Can anyone help me with finding me new FLAT cord which is used for lacing armor parts together ? In Europe I only find round shaped cord, but not flat cord (Ito) like they use on the handles of swords. I do not know how they call this cord in Japan, but I only know/find ito for swords. Anyone have an idea how the cord is called used in the parts of yoroi and where I can buy it new these days ?
Many thanks
Danny

My do is laced with leather. It seems to date from about 1600. It is dyed on one side but not the other. I am not sure what kind of leather it is, but if I remember right, Kozan recomends doe skin. I know a lot of old armors were re-laced during the Edo with silk, and good luck finding that... Some modern made armors use a synthetic, and I can't find that either.

I did find, however, that you can order flat silk shoe laces, on a custom basis. In a pinch you can get 72 inch cotton shoelaces. But. Authentic, no...

I am interested in finding the a source for real silk lacing myself, so I hope someone comes up with a better suggestion than I have.

You might ask Toraba, tsuka ito comes in 30 m lengths in silk or cotton at http://www.namikawa-ltd.co.jp/cgi-bin/list_e.cgi 11 mm wide. I guess you could use that. It's out there, I'm sure Toraba is the best bet. http://www.toraba.com/ John

Hi, thanks to all who answered this thread and for the info.
It helped. I knew Kevin and his stock from Ryujin Swords already, but I didn't know Namikawa from Namikawa Heibei Co.,Ltd yet. And Namikawa sells both silk and synthetic cords in different colors and different sizes (6mm, 8mm,...) AND they can even "make" cords and tassels on demand for armors ! very helpful and reliable seller and fast shipping !

You seem to have found a source. One other means is the J Yahoo auctions where a regular supplier puts them up. I bought some 6mm flat cord to repair my helmet fairly recently. Quick and easy.
