Well, it's finally here. At first I'll be releasing a few podcast episodes that were recorded at the Conference over the past 4 days, but hopefully next month a regular podcast will kick off. At that point the plan is to cover a single topic over probably about a 45 minute period, and to try and do 1-2 a month from here on out. We'll see how it goes. Also, as this is a new podcast, not to mention an amateur one that uses free online software to edit it, it is going to take a few tries to get the audio right, so go easy on us about the sound quality while the kinks are worked out:
http://samuraiarchives.podbean.com/
If you use Itunes, you can subscribe here:
Go ahead and subscribe, and you should be automatically notified when each new episode is released. I went ahead and submitted it to Itunes, and should be searchable within the next couple of days, if not sooner.
Oh, and spread the word!

It may sound odd but I use the mic from Rock Band to do audio it works for me since it records really good audio and has some wind resistant features. Also it has a USB so it plugs straight into a computer. I did the narration for a documentary for a class project and I liked the audio. The only issue was I forgot to raise the volume in post production and the narrations came out louder than the documentary. |

Well, when we're in a quiet location, the ambient sound problem goes away, but the left mic seems to be on the fritz, it buzzes when it picks up certain pitches or something, so I think I need an external mic to plug into it. The digital recorder has a USB plug built right into it, and it records in high quality MP3, so the other problem is the actual editing software itself. It's a freebie from the internet, so you can't do anything about the compressor - it compresses the file quite a bit, which is good in that the file size is about 10% smaller, but that also results in it being about 20% worse. Any recommendations on sound editing software for a PC?
Also, I'm seeing a lot of USB plugs on mics, I need one that plugs into a regular small round plug (not sure what you call it, but the size of round plug that regular ipod headphones plug into) any recommendations there, anyone? |

I love the theme song idea.
Sure, it's absurd and ridiculous. But, actually, it has that classic 70s TV theme song sort of quality that could actually make it a genuinely good intro/outro theme. _________________ My blog on Japanese art & history: http://chaari.wordpress.com

Well, that just leaves us with the problem of being sued by Trololo or whacked by the Russian Mafia. _________________ Shop Amazon.com, support the Samurai Archives: http://amzn.to/wnDX2j

I know you'll think I'm kidding, but I found this terrifying. I'll probably have nightmares.
As far as a theme song, you can't do any better than the tune on the Samurai Forum Real Ultimate Power Moderator page. |

Audacity is a good, pretty user-friendly, and free audio-editing software for PC (and Mac and Linux...) that lets you have a lot of control over settings and quality. (Their site is HERE.)
As for microphones with an 1/8th"/3.5mm connector... there are a few options, and you can probably find even more by searching around. HERE and HERE are a couple examples, though I can't guarantee their quality; I have more experience with USB and XLR mics.
Happy podcasting! |

I've been using audacity, unfortunately exporting to mp3 degrades the soundquality an unacceptable amount. I have a few leads on some good hugh end editing software I'm loking into. _________________ Shop Amazon.com, support the Samurai Archives: http://amzn.to/wnDX2j

Ok, after messing with some audacity settings, sound quality is not really an issue anymore, which should be evident with the 3rd podcast that will be released monday. All that's left is for me to pick up a good microphone.
We have finished our conference coverage this weekend, and the next couple of podcasts will be out soon, so I'm open to suggestions for topics. Essentially our permanent format from here on out will be a discussion of a single topic for between 40-60 minutes. Anything interesting is up for debate, so feel free to post here your ideas or PM them too me, whichever you prefer. On that will be coming up in the next month or two will be a Kofun podcast, but start sending some more ideas my way. Also, comments on the podcast are appreciated, that's the only way we'll get better, although with the format change coming up, the conference coverage was a special case. _________________ Shop Amazon.com, support the Samurai Archives: http://amzn.to/wnDX2j

I finally listened to your idea for a themesong. My reaction:

We continue to examine the battle of Nagashino vis a vis the "Military Revolution" theory, and look at the Japanese and English sources for the battle, as well as some of the history of the gun during the Sengoku period. _________________ Shop Amazon.com, support the Samurai Archives: http://amzn.to/wnDX2j

EP03 The History of Guns in Medieval Japan
Get it here: http://bit.ly/j8zsMr
In the 3rd episode of the Samurai Archives Podcast, your hosts tackle the history of the gun in Japan prior to and including the introduction of firearms by the Portuguese in the 1540's. Contrary to popular belief, and often overlooked by historians, guns did in fact make their way into Japan as early as the 1450's, mainly through Ryukyu or to mainland Japan via China and Korea. Although they remained more of an oddity or curio until they were mass produced beginning in the 1540's, there are accounts of them in Japan long before the introduction by Western traders, which we present to you in this episode. And, for anyone who has ever wondered what the difference is between a musket, matchlock, and arquebus, we'll give you a concise explanation of the types of firearms in question.
Mentioned in this podcast:

The goal is to try to get more than just the standard books into it. Glad it seems to be working. _________________ Shop Amazon.com, support the Samurai Archives: http://amzn.to/wnDX2j
