Tatsunoshi has already mentioned the Sekigahara game (Board Game thread). I found this link earlier today on the Armchair General web. http://www.armchairgeneral.com/sekigahara-boardgame-review.htm It is nice to see the magazine/web covering samurai history.

Oh god. One of my profs (I can't remember who) made an off-hand comment about Hideyoshi being Shogun, and I had to resist the urge to raise my hand and correct the teacher. ... grrrrr.

I think you should have corrected him.

Ah, yes, I remember who it was now. Not Szostak. My Modern Japanese History professor at another school.

And I did correct him. On quite a few things. Brilliant guy when it came to conceptual stuff (which is my weak point), but really had no head for dates or certain other kinds of details. That was me, the one who always gets poked at here at S-A for not caring about Sengoku, being the one telling the professor Nagashino was 1575, not 1576, and that Honnoji was 1582, not 1583...

I did this exact same thing in a first year Japanese class I took. The teacher didn't believe it, and also told me I was wrong when I told them Hideyoshi wasn't Shogun but Kanpaku or Taiko. He stated that taiko was a drum, not a political position. Yes, he did. Not surprisingly, he was replaced by a native Japanese for the next semester. But even she made me wonder, since she had never heard of Japanese pirates being called wakou.

Bite your tongue.

What if Szostak visits this forum? He might read your post.

I came across the statement in a google book that Hideyoshi made Nobunaga's son, presumably a mistake for his grandson Sanbôshi, shogun, but I could not see the context.

He might. And hopefully he'd realize how absolutely WRONG his information is. I've got nothing to hide about it--when a professor's wrong, he's wrong. I'm not talking about matters of interpretation, or I don't like the way he presents it...the man said that Toyotomi Hideyoshi was defeated by Tokugawa Ieyasu at Sekigahara, among other things. Things that are easily correctable by looking in ANY FRESHMAN LEVEL JAPANESE HISTORY BOOK. If he sees this and gets in a snit that people were pointing out that he's teaching incorrect facts, then I need to drop his class.
