This obviously spans a longer span of time than just "Ancient to Heian," but I figured I'd put it here.

A new survey book, aiming I gather to be a good undergraduate History of Japan textbook, has just come out, edited by Karl Friday.

Personally, I think the title "... to 1850" implies that it's more focused on Sengoku and Edo exclusively, but judging from the Table of Contents, it looks like it really does address the full range of Prehistory up through Edo.

I'm particularly excited about this book because it seems, though I'm judging just from the chapter titles & authors, that it's not your same old stuff, but really does incorporate more up-to-date academic attitudes, and helps problematize or question certain assumptions - such as the names we assign to certain periods.

The list of chapter authors reads like a veritable who's who of the biggest names in the field, including Gina Barnes, Karl Friday, Bruce Batten, Joan Piggott, Mary Elizabeth Berry, Mikael Adolphson, Ross Bender, Thomas Conlan, Phillip Brown, David Howell, and Frank Chance, along with a few others who may very well be big names as well but whose work I personally am not familiar with.

Judging, again, merely from the Table of Contents, it seems majorly thorough, and I look forward to having my own copy of the book, and being able to assign it to my future students. It is a bit pricy, though, at US$49.00.

Anyway, just thought you guys would be interested to hear about it.

The Sengoku treatment looks pretty light and diffuse as I expected, but it looks good, I'd consider buying it.

Another new book is the UMich translation of Zoku Nihon no rekishi o yominaosu called Rethinking Japanese History by Amino Yoshihiko. So far pretty good, although dating is hard to track. John

Thank you for posting this. A lot of big names, here -- each showing off their specialty. Looking forward to getting my hands on it!
