So, I'm doing a favor for a family member who works for a European company that is sending him to Japan for a business trip. They have no one who speaks Japanese, so he asked my wife (he's married to her sister) to contact some of the offices he'll be meeting with to do basic coordination.

The problem stems from how to represent ourselves over the phone/email. We don't work for the company, nor are we actually contracted to assist, we're just helping out a family member. So I'd like to say something along the lines of "we are acting on behalf of...." to contact you, etc.

I feel like 代理 is more of a "representing in lieu of", as the context I've seen it in is normally when one person is invited to an official function and someone else goes in their place to represent them. "代わりに" on the other hand seems a bit too informal, and doesn't convey the "behalf" part.

Any advice on a phrase to use?

There are a few nouns that may be applicable, like 'tsute' 伝手. Maybe? John

I've gotten some help offline that tells me that "kawari ni" with the right other words is fine and conveys what I want.
