Looks like this year's wins it for realism--at least everyone gets dirty!

Interesting. Did the battle take place on a river bridge, or in a forest, or in the middle of a town? I don't know much about the battle, but seems like that would be a known detail, yet every one of these has a different scene for where the battle took place. Seems odd to me.

All three are appropriate. The "battle" was more like a series of skirmishes that took place over several days at different locations within the same general area with different forces. Two bridges were the early focal points, there was fighting in the towns located by them, and when the Shogunal forces broke they generally scattered into the nearby woods and forests pursued by the 'Imperial Army'.

In the Yae No Sakura pics (which of course center around Haijime Saito who is going to be a leading character in this drama ) you will notice the Shinsengumi in ordinary grey dress with Makoto patches on the sleeves .
I read somewhere years ago that this was the uniform they wore in their post Kyoto existence .

Tobuga Gotoku had a great depiction of the Senian War ,One scene which takes place the night prior to the final skirmish where Saigo is killed depicts the rebels sitting around a fire . Hanjiro Nakamura starts playing a squeeze box as Saigo and his now small band deliver a rousing rendition of La Marseille .
