Been curious about this one for a long time and finally watched it. I was really pleasantly surprised and thought it superb for a short TV drama. It was really beautifully shot...

It was nice to have a depiction of one of the great pre-Edo era sword masters, instead of the usual Miyamoto Musashi focus.

Anyone else seen this and similarly liked it as much as I? Any other recommendations similar to it that you would recommend? I have been a long-time jidaigeki film fan but have not explored the TV drama genre much.

I've got it and thought it was just super--ditto what you said about how beautifully shot it was, to the point it surprised me there wasn't a lot more "buzz" about it.

Highly recommended!

To be honest i stopped watching this when the Witches came in ,it looked like it was veering towards some early 90's Tsui Hark epic like Swordsman II or East Is Red .

Witches? You mean the miko shrine maidens? Honestly, the shrine maidens don't play a huge role in the story. And, they pretty much just act like typical shrine maidens you see in other traditional shows/films---nothing overly strange at all.

If you have not watched the full series, I would strongly recommend going back and giving it another try. I honestly consider this now one of the best portrayals of a samurai swordsman and the classic musha shugyo quest that I have ever seen.
