Thanks to Princess Chiba for unearthing this little oddity...it's Taiga Drama Monopoly! Yes, for the 50th anniversary of the Taiga Drama a couple of years ago in 2011, NHK produced a licensed version of the all time popular boardgame Monopoly. It's just like Monopoly, only better, because...well, because, there are samurai and stuff! Even if the 47 Ronin show their murdering mugs. Here's Monopoly Taiga Drama 50th Anniversary: Memorable Places Edition.

Who needs a metal wheelbarrow when you have your choice of plastic waraji in six decorator colors? And who wants to mess with the dollar when you can have REAL PAPER ryo gold coins in seven denominations (in the original Monopoly color shades)! Yes, no expense was spared in making this version of the game! Pass go, collect a 200 ryo salary (yes, should have made it koku and called it a stipend). There are little plastic Edo row houses and inns, too, that look an awful lot like Western houses and hotels.

And then of course the game board-it's decorated with several popular icons of pre-modern Japanese history, and all the properties are assigned to specific Taiga drama by lots. You have Ryomaden, Yoshitsune (the GOOD 1966 version), Aoi Tokugawa Sendai, Onna Taikoki, Ako Roshi, Dokuganryu Masamune, and Ten To Chi To. The low rent district is, appropriately enough, the two properties associated with the bum of Tosa in Ryomaden. But what are the Boardwalk and Park Place of this edition? You'd think it would be Kyoto and Edo, but no. Instead we get Tokyo (Tokyo? In an Edo period Taiga? Oh, the pain!) and Hikone from the first Taiga in 1962, Hana No Shogai (Tairo Ii Naosuke). Every Taiga makes it into the game through the 'Chance' and 'Community Chest' cards. Heck, there's even a 'Ryukyu No Kaze' sightseeing card for Meth!!!

Good fun, except when you're getting bankrupted by your wife who turns out to be a Monopoly shark.

Posted on the film forum instead of entertainment so the Taiga drama fans would get a look.

"Drool" . I wonder if the "bum of Tosa " ("The Dosser From Tosa "to use UK slang .)Is the 1968 version ?.

Its funny the bum/dosser from Tosa has had two Taiga's all to himself ,and one where he was the second lead character ,yet all three performed not so well with ratings .However dramas like Atsuhime where he is a special guest do really well .

Nah, it's Ryomaden (the 2010 version). Never really bought into the whole Ryoma mythology myself-hard to reconcile the popular image of the carefree, compassionate, happy-go-lucky Ryoma who only wanted a country where everyone could smile with the reality of a guy who helped forge an alliance of two rebel provinces devoted to mass bloodshed to gain power, not to mention the personal benefits he accrued by being a war profiteer and smuggler. When you get right down to it, Ryoma always seemed more like a merchant who dabbled in statesmanship to help feather his nest...kind of like a Bakumatsu-era lobbyist.

Best portrayal of Ryoma I've seen was in the two 'Jin' series, where they examined some of these warts.
