The Metropolitan has an exhibition up until next Fall about the founding of its Arms & Armor department, 100 years ago.

Bashford Dean, founder of the department, visited Japan in the last years of the Meiji period, and contributed a number of Japanese objects to the collection.

Here are my photos of some of the stuff in the exhibition, including a tsuba (sword handguard) from the Kofun period, a catapult stone from the Crusades, and a circa 1610 Dutch helmet modified by the Japanese, : http://www.flickr.com/photos/toranosuke/tags/bashforddean/

Thank you for the pictures.

I was just at the MET a few days ago. Is this the same as the Armor Room near the cafeteria? Or is this in a separate area?

The exhibit is tucked away in a corner room at one end of the Arms & Armor gallery, under the stairs.

Thanks for the pictures, he had quite an interesting life and was one of the people responsible for what we know today about the subject of Japanese armor, here is a link to Dean's book "Catalogue of the Loan Collection of Japanese Armor", Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.), Bashford Dean, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1903. The entire book is available online.
