Professor Vaporis has a new book out that takes a look at daily life in Edo period Japan by analyzing contemporary documents written from people enencompassing all strata of society. Looks very interesting. Here's the link to the publisher's page.

If it's even half as good as Tour of Duty, it'll still be an amazing book. I'm looking forward to reading Breaking Barriers, too. _________________ My blog on Japanese art & history: http://chaari.wordpress.com

All, I am pleased to inform to the SA community that the paperback version of Prof Vaporis' book, Voices of Early Modern Japan is now available It is selling fast, and Amazon is already out. Keep on the lookout for when they get more copies and order it through the Samurai Archives bookstore site or if you can't wait, try ordering it from the publisher or another site.

For those interested, I have now received my copy, and it is not so much a scholarly work analyzing historical documents, but rather a collection of documents in translation for easy use in undergraduate classrooms, i.e. as reading assignments. It includes questions for students to think about as they read each document, etc. Much like "Sources of Japanese Tradition" or David Lu's "Japan: A Documentary History."
That said, it is still of course a very nice source for research, too. If I ever need to cite an English translation of the Buke shohatto, for example, or especially commoner views on certain topics, I now have a very easily accessible source to turn to. _________________ My blog on Japanese art & history: http://chaari.wordpress.com

Voices of Early Modern Japan is indeed a very good collection both translated resources that cover just about every aspect of Edo period life and culture. I highly value the work Prof Vaporis has done and strongly recommend it for those wanting this kind of resource.
Just please note that this book is not necessarily set up to be read cover to cover over a weekend. It's the kind of book where one can dive in and focus on where specific interests lie. _________________
