Reading this today and I recognized that Mori Arinori also went to England at the same time as Nagasawa, met Thomas Lake Harris, became a Christian and followed him to the utopian community, too. Two other famous Meiji men who went to London in 1865 were Inoue Kaoru (Monta) and Ito Hirobume (Shunsuke), but of course, they were called back to Japan to take part in the struggle to topple the Shogunate.

Unlike Nagasawa, Mori returned to Japan then came back to the U.S. as the first Japanese ambassador to the U.S. He was there when the Iwakura Mission arrived
with Kido Takayoshi, Okubo Toshimichi and Ito in 1872. It seemed that the other men saw Mori as an upstart at that time.

I'd like to correct something in this post. Mori Arinori and Nagasawa Kanaye and 17 others were in the group that left Japan in 1865 to study at University of London College. Inoue Kaoru (Monte) and Ito Hirobumi (Shunsuke) were in the previous group that left in 1863. It's clear that the Choshu Daimyo and Thomas Glover sent off the first group, which was celebrated as the Choshu Five. This summer since it will be 150 years since the Choshu Five went to London, there will be various celebrations in both countries:http://www.uk.emb-japan.go.jp/en/event/2013/choshu/info.html

A heretofore unknown letter by Sakamoto Ryôma, written to Goto Shojiro only about 10 days before Ryôma's death, has been found in the private possession of an average family in Tokyo. They say they obtained it at an antique store for around 1000 yen about 30 years ago, and have just sort of held onto it...

Experts at the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum and elsewhere have now examined the scroll and made the determination that it is genuine. The scroll is now on temporary loan to the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum in Kôchi, where it is on display until the first of June.

If you can read Japanese, the museum's page about the exhibit, and the object, along with a transcription of Ryôma's text: http://www.kochi-bunkazaidan.or.jp/~ryoma/shinhakken.htm
