Read this over at the English-language Japanese news site, Tamanegi, thought it was interesting...

Quote:
Was Oda Nobunaga Really a Prince of Darkness?

In various forms of media, from TV shows to video game, one of the great personalities of the Sengoku era in Japanese history, Oda Nobunaga, has been portrayed as an evil villain, even in league with dark forces that transcend human concerns. But could it be possible that the real historical Nobunaga was in league with the forces of darkness as part of some Faustian bargain, exchanging his soul for incredible power on earth? Some experts say perhaps, but others are not so sure.

For most historians, this thesis proves so terrifying that most refuse to research it. But an intrepid team of scholars from Miskatonic University in the United States dared to launch an expedition to Gifu Castle, where Oda Nobunaga based his campaign in his bid to unify Japan in the 16th century. This week, the team announced they had uncovered documentation that indicates the famous warlord may have sought occult means of increasing his might.

"We were amazed to find in a hidden compartment within the castle previously undiscovered journals belonging to Luis Frois," said Prof. Charles Dexter Ward, the leader of the expedition, in a conference call with reporters. "Although we are still in the process of translating them, the journals suggest that Oda Nobunaga may have sought Frois' assistance in obtaining the assistance of infernal allies."

Frois was a Portuguese missionary with the Society of Jesus who came to Japan in the 1560s. He came into contact with Oda Nobunaga in 1569, after the latter had set himself up with the support of the shogunate with plans to expand his territory in all directions. Frois' previously known work from this period has long been a source for Japanese and Western historians studying the Sengoku era.

These newly discovered journals by Frois, said Prof. Ward, reveal that Frois took with him to Japan an book referred to as the Necronomicon, an ancient tome which had come to Jesuit possession some years earlier. Frois was in the process of translating it from Arabic to Portuguese when he shared some of its contents with Oda Nobunaga.

"What exactly Frois shared with him is unclear, but from the journals we are able to infer that it had to do with accessing forbidden knowledge and unleashing malignant spirits of untold horror upon the world," said Prof. Ward.

The Frois journals suggest that Nobunaga's 1571 massacre of the Tendai monks on Mount Hiei was less about suppressing the unruly religious order than it was about seeking out an unspecified relic that would put the possessor in contact with the "Great Old Ones." The journals imply that Nobunaga was successful in doing so, but what came next remains a mystery.

"After 1571, the journals become less and less coherent," Prof. Ward explained. "There are lots of allusions to something dead but dreaming, to cosmic forces beyond human ken, and even text we haven't be able to identify as any human language. This has proven a daunting task for our translators, but we hope to do our best to decipher it."

The idea that Nobunaga was in league with spawns of Satan is not new. A recently discovered haiku by a contemporary of Nobunaga, tea master Sen no Rikyū, indicates that it was a hot topic even in the 16th century:

Oda did the mash
He performed the Monster Mash
'Twas a graveyard smash

I still tremble with fear when I recall Henrietta's frequent escapes from the SA Fruit Cellar-spreading terror and havoc across the land, blighting the very countryside with her unspeakable horrors.
