The Iemon statement you quoted *isn't there* anymore. Nor is any statement by anyone else--I'm just wondering where the "thuggery" comments are coming from, since no one seems to have mentioned it. You're joke went over fine with me, no problems with that--I was just confused.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to my crib, yo. Fo' Shizzle.

Yes, certain posts are missing...aahhh the smell of intrigue surrounds us... OR could it be we were chumming the water just a bit too much and before any sharks could attack, the benevolent Shogun did what he had to do to protect his subjects from the dangers that lurk in the ocean's depths.

Well, we'll never know...

Actually, the "thuggery" comment is still there. Here is Iyemon's entire post quoted:

Here is where the "thuggery" comments came from. And also where my rather lame joke also came from. Just Kidding

Actually, LtDomer, I'm really on the same page with you as far as the Shinsengumi goes. I'm joining the group to try and find out where all the interest and sometime-hero worship comes. Because I'm truly confused about it. Confused Rolling Eyes

Ok, I see - you quoted this from the previous page - it looks like no one else could find it, so they thought it had been deleted soon after you had quoted it previously. I just went to the previous page and found it.

Make that this afternoon, after we finish watching the Super Bowl. Too bad I'm not interested in Shinsengumi, because Hijikata's all over the place here.

Planning on it. But I'm not trekking to the Hijikata Themepark dragging my wife and kid kicking and screaming.

This is our first big trip with a 1 year old--yesterday we got in to Hakodate at 3 and proceeded to do nothing since the little Tono-sama wouldn't take his nap. Today we're planning to hit Goryokaku after the Super Bowl ends, then Motomachi and Hakodateyama--I'm not pushing my luck any further than that.

Though I will be sad to miss the "whack-a-ryoma"...

As I said earlier, it was a rather lame joke. Just Kidding No, you didn't specifically call Ryoma a "thug."
Quote:

You are absolute correct. There were bad actors on BOTH sides of this battles. As well as heroes.

In reality, as I've said in an earlier Bakumatsu forum post, there were three sides, rather than two, in this age. There were:

1. The Royalists. They wanted to continue the feudal system, only with the Emperor rather than the Shogun in charge

2. The Pro-Shogunate people, including the Shinsengumi. They wanted to continue with the feudal system with the Shogun still in charge

3. The Reformists. This group included Sakamoto Ryoma. They wanted to abolish feudalism, the feudal class system, and institute a more democratic system.

Okada Izo was certainly not a very nice person.

Well here you go, for all you Shinsengumi crazies. You can't get away from Hijikata Toshizo in Hakodate, much as I've tried.

Saw the poster on the way to Goryokaku...the fort and Hijikata, what more did I need to see? I thought about turning around right there.

But then I saw the "Hijikata Toshizo Scallop Burger" at Lucky Pierrot--how could I resist that? (I did, and had a Kujira burger instead. I'm SURE it was killed for research only...)

Further on towards Goryokaku we saw the REAL Hijikata, in the flesh:

Went into Goryokaku and found the Hijikata Toshizo museum--OH BOY, SHINSENGUMI FANS! LT's gonna get you the REAL SCOOP!

But then this was hanging on the door....

Sorry, closed today. Alas....

So we went up into the observation tower, and alas, the Shinsengumi Store had overrun the place...Did you know Hijikata was sponsored by Sanrio?

Come on, man--have you NO PRIDE?

At least he was nice enough to pose for a picture with me and my son...

Full Goryokaku and Hijikata pics can be found here.

I have always maintained there were good and bad on both sides ,but this idea the Tokugawa wanted to preserve feudalisim is a complete myth and i really blame the Hillsbourough's and Turnbull's for this drivel .Keikei was a comlplete two faced ass but so were Saigo and Okubo ,But during his Regency and brief Shogunate he tried really hard to modernise Japan aside from sending a consulate to France he tried to modernise the Army and Navy .It really is worth reading the acounts and manuals of the people who were actualy there during the Bakumatsu /Boshin era not the slanted stuff that was written in the Meiji /Showa era's.A good place to start is Katsu Kaishu's memoirs and letters that can be obtained in translated form through Harvard.
