Hakodate city is planning to rebuild Hakodate Bugyo-sho.
http://www.bnn-s.com/bnn/bnnMain?news_genre=17&news_cd=H20021022475

Hakodate Bugyo-sho was in Goryokaku, demolished by Meiji government.

Quote:
Fort Goryokaku
The star shaped Fort Goryokaku was constructed in Hakodate from 1857 to 1864 as Japan's first Western style fortress. Its ruins are now the Goryokaku Park, which in May becomes one of Hokkaido's most popular spots for cherry blossom viewing.

In 1868, when the Meiji Restoration led to the overthrow of the Edo Shogunate, loyalist rebels fled to Hokkaido instead of surrendering and used Hakodate's Goryokaku as their headquarters in the resulting civil war against the Imperial forces. The loyalists surrendered in 1869.

Bakumatsu isn't so long time ago.

http://homepage2.nifty.com/02-24/readbook2.html
"10 years ago, Boshin Forum was held in Akita as a part of anniversary of 130th Meiji restration event.
The forum caught national attension because mayors of Aizu and Hagi(Chushu) attended.
Hagi offered reconciliation but Aizu refused.
At the next Mayoral election in Aizu, the person who promised "Never make reconciliation with Choshu" won the election."

Sasaki Tadasaburo's Chain mail found in Kyoto.
http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20060615-00000040-kyt-l26

Ryozen rekishi-kan museum says they believe it was worn in Boshin war.
The Chain mail was made for winter, it has blood stains and bullet holes and a slash on left shoulder and Sasaki's Kamon.

Sasaki was heavily injured in the battle of Toba-Fushimi, then he escaped to Kishu(Wakayama) and died there.

Ryozen Rekishi-kan is going to display the chain mail in this October.

Please check "The Assassination of Sakamoto Ryoma" thread for more info about Sasaki Tadasaburo.

Date Yasumune who is the 18th head of Date family invited Tokugawa Tsunenari who is the 18th head of Tokugawa family to Sendai.
Date Yasumune said "It's been 400 years that Ue-sama to visit Sendai."

Tokugawa Tsunenari is actually great grand child of Lord Matsudaira Katamori of Aizu.
He used to work at Nihon Yusen, the global logistics company.
There are some funny episodes while he was in there.
People called him Shogun in foreign countries, some people even asked him "Do you still cut people?" "Do you have 10 wives?" "Are you ninja?"
One of his co-worker was the 18t head of Maeda family of Kaga-han.
Their boss used say "I am the first person to use Tokugawa and Maeda since Hideyoshi."

Apparently this was a move to indirectly show support for Abe Shinzo, the guy most likely to become the new Prime Minister, since he is from Yamaguchi-ken.

This is not about Bakumatsu but I post here because it's at Nijo castle.

Quote:
Ancient hunting to be featured at Nijo Castle

The art of falconry, which was enjoyed by members of the Tokugawa shogunate families, including Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616), will be demonstrated in autumn for the first time in Nijo Castle in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto.
The Kyoto municipal government has organized the event for Sept. 16 and Nov. 12, during an autumn festival at the city's popular sightseeing spot.
In cooperation with the Japanese Falconers' Association, a nonprofit organization in Hachioji, Tokyo, falconers will put on a demonstration on the 5,200-square-meter grass square of the castle built by Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Members of the association will explain the culture of falconry and show their various skills, including how the birds catch their prey.
The castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was built in 1603 and includes on its grounds Ninomaru Palace, which houses a mural of hawks on a pine tree by Kano Tanyu (1602-1674), and other buildings.
