On Keio 3, December 18 (1/12/1868), Abe and Shinohara (surviving members of the Kodai-ji To from the Aburano Koji Incident) shot Kondo to revenge Ito's death.

That's a spot on answer. Anyone want to help fill out the details for people who don't have the "big picture" of the contemporary history?

Sub-questions:

Why was Ito killed? Under what circumstances did Kondo end up in a position to have an assasination attempt? How much planning went into the attack?

Kondo was getting detailed informations of them from his spy Saito.
One day, Saito returned to the Shinsengumi and told that the Goryo-Eji(Kodaiji-to) is planning to assassinate Kondo and take over the Shinsengumi.
Then Kondo and Hijikata decided to kill them.

Actually, there wasn't much planning went into the attack, the remnants of Ito's faction simply happened to notice Kondo returning from a meeting at Nijo Castle and decided that it was the perfect opportunity to take revenge for Ito's death.

The following is quoted from Hillsborough's book:

Quote:
After the meeting, on December 18, Kondo remounted his horse for the return journey. Lying in wait on both sides of the road near a place called Tanbabashi, guns loaded and at the read, were a group of Ito's men, including Shinohara Yasunoshin and Ito's brother Suzuki Mikisaburo. "We didn't depend on guns back in those days," one of them recalled years later, "Once we fired, we assumed they would come charging in the direction of the smoke with their swords drawn."

Shinohara shot Kondo as his party rode southward through the cold dim of the late wintry afternoon. Shinohara missed his mark, however, hitting Kondo on the right shoulder. Kondo was badly wounded but survived the ambush, According to Shinohara, "he paid no attention to the profuse bleeding," but rather whipped his horse and made a fast escape. The assailants pursued the others with their swords and spears, killing one of the corpsmen and Kondo's manservant.

Did Nakamura Hanjiro or someone in Satsuma han residence know what they would do?

You would have to wonder. Weren't Ito's men under the protection of Satsuma after Ito's assassination? Who provided Shinohara the gun he used to shoot Kondo?

Nakamura Hanjiro was upset that Shinohara had only wounded Kondo, enabling him to flee on his horse. Nakamura, according to Hillsborough's book, asked Shinohara why he didn't just aim for the horse so they could have then done in Kondo with swords.

After Kondo was executed, Nakamura Hanjiro used to say "If I was there, I would stop it. It was regretful thing, he was great person."

Quote:
「乃公等がいたら、決して殺させるんじゃなかった。立派な人物を惜しいことをした」

So what made his mind change?

The quote was from Shinsengumi Ibun so it may not be true.
Possibly another Shimozawa fiction. Sad
