At long last, "Japan and Her People" is now available. You can find it here:

http://www.amazon.com/Japan-Her-People-Anna-Hartshorne/dp/097903972X/
This is what I've been working on for the last 5 months or so.

Thanks to everyone who helped out - I think the printer put it up before we had an "acknowledgements" section, so Nagaeyari might want to hold off for a couple weeks before buying it Just Kidding

So, anyway, help support the samurai archives and the future Journal by picking up a copy. It should be worth your time.

Couldn't that simply mean that 50 cent is doing better and Martha Stewart is doing worse...and we're staying the same?

Just think about how high sales could skyrocket if some place in the book, you guys could have mentioned two words: HARRY POTTER. Laughing I don't know. Maybe in the forward, there could have been a mention of Harry Potter transport through time to the Maruyama lands or perhaps even the Otori han to help kick some Tohan butt! Very Happy

Just think what your sales would be if the book was titled Harry Potter and the Mystical People of Japan...

Harry Potter would be a hopeless wuss (not that he isn't already) against the magical ninjer of the Tribe!
And Kit, you just moved up some more. Watch out, Weezy! I showed my sammyrai spirit by ordering the Kitsuno Special.

WARNING: THREAD HIJACK! We're taking this one to the Three Countries!

Oh, come on, Heron, I'm sure you can do a deal to breath new life into the now defunct Harry Potter franchise by having him teleport to the world of the Otori...

Here are some sample titles/projects:

1) Harry Potter and the Secret of the Urn: An Otori Sazen Adventure (Otori Sazen is a grandson of Otori Takeo). What is so special about that ugly urn? Could it contain a map to buried treasure on an island in the southern seas? In the movie version that is in the planning stages, Johnny Depp has agreed to play the role of Captain Terada Fumio, a scoundrel and gentleman.

2) Harry Potter and the Phantom Riders of Tohan. In this one, Harry helps the Otori fight the evil spirit of Iida Sadamu and his ghostly Riders of Tohan.

3) Harry Potter and the Arai Ichizoku Imbo. Set as a companion story to Harsh Cry of the Heron, Harry works side-by-side with Takeo's young spymaster, Muto Taku, to find out just what the resurgent Arai are up to.

4) Harry Potter and the Hidden Shadow Hunters. Violence, forbidden romance and magic. This one has it all. Harry Potter teleports back further in time in the Otori saga to help the Hidden escape the dreaded Shinsenphooey corps of Tribe assassins hired by a mysterious dark lord hell bent on terrorizing the Hidden. Harry uses a little magic to help one of the Shadow Hunters, Takeo's father, fall in love with one of the Hidden. A movie version is in the works and stars a CG rendition of the late Ishihara Yujiro to play a role as a Tribe "Shadow Hunter". Let’s see if Harry’s magic can keep the CG Yujiro from singing the movie’s theme song.

5) Harry Potter and the Curse of Lady Cold Blood. In this one, Harry is called in to help break the curse that has plagued Lady Kaede, a beautiful young woman who seems to have a peculiar problem. Any man that gets close to her dies. Will the boy wizard also perish in his attempt to lift the curse? Rumor has it that Kaji Meiko has consulted with Demi Moore's plastic surgeon in an effort to get herself prepared to take on the role of Lady Cold Blood should a film version be in the works.

Very Happy

Akaguma- good idea about Nicky Cage. I wouldn't object though if nobody puts the fires out and lets him just burn out...

On a serious note- Kitsuno- I ordered the book on July 23, and Amazon just only sent it out on Wednesday. I don't know what the delay is, but could this mean that I will get one of the newer versions with the acknowledgments and dash corrections? I don't know what the shipping delay was all about. All I could think of was that they ran out of stock?

It is print on demand, so it doesn't run out of stock per se, but I think they make a certain number of copies available at a time. I got mine last week, and it took 3 days. It probably has more to do with you being in Japan. And it will be a couple weeks before I get all that stuff fixed, so you'll get a galley copy, which is a limited run that should pull in a hefty profit on the rare book market on ebay in a couple years Laughing

I just got back from spending most of the day at the Tokyo-Edo Museum and when I got home, Japan and Her People was sitting in my mailbox. It finally arrived!! The problem is that I don't know when I can get to it. I can't keep up with the books I keep ordering! Laughing

Oh, and by the way, I did buy a book at the museum- a very nice coffee table book on Hojo Tokimune from an exhibit that seems to have coincided with the NHK Taiga drama from 2001. There are some great pictures of scrolls, screens, letters and photos of Kamukura-era swords and armor as well as those from Mongolia, China and Korea.

You'll no doubt be breathlessly watching your Amazon number. May I suggest getting an account at Rankforest? It's a free service, good way to track that magic number. Here's a sample page:

Yeah. My first time, after living in Tokyo sine '97. Embarassed The museum was nice and it reminded me a lot of a museum in Hong Kong that traces the evolution of that city and the lifestyle of its inhabitants.

I did enjoy my visit to the museum, but for some reason, I really wasn't overly "wowed" by the permanent collection. I'd be willing to go there again when they have a more interesting special exhibit. The current special exhibit, trains of the Showa era, doesn't excite me.

I do have to say that the Tokyo-Edo Museum's audio visual library was most impressive. I pulled a 30 minute documentary on Tokugawa Yoshinobu that was quite interesting that focused on photos of him and photos that he took. He was an avid photographer and a pretty good one at that.

A slightly updated version of "Japan and Her People" is now available - it contains a few minor corrections, a new acknowledgments section, etc.:

http://www.amazon.com/Japan-Her-People-Anna-Hartshorne/dp/097903972X/

Also, if anyone with an amazon.com account would be kind enough to click the boxes next to the search terms here: Tags customers associate with this product - we'd appreciate it.
