Does anyone have or know where I can get some detailed info on this spear? Also, does anyone have any pictures of say a modern day replication of it, or wether anyone knows if there is a smith that still makes spears, wether it be exact copies, or all types of spear.

Tonbo-Giri, Dragonfly-Cutter. A dragonfly landed on the blade and was instantly cut in half because of the sharpness. This is all I know. If anyone knows who the smith was who orginally made it for Tadakatsu, or how it was made, it will be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou.

According to wikipedia

Tonbo-kiri 蜻蛉切 (Dragonfly-Cutter)

Tonbo-kiri (or Tonbo-giri) first used to belong to the HATTORI family 服部氏, then HONDA Tadakatsu 本多忠勝 inherited it. Tonbo-kiri is a well known spear with which Tadakatsu achieved numerous fighting exploits. This spear is known as one of the Three Most Famed Spears (Tenka Sanmeisô 天下三名槍). It's name come from the story of a dragonfly that had been cut in two when it landed on its blade. It's said to be six meters long (whereas usual long-spear (nagayari 長槍) are 4.5 meters long. It has been forged by Muramasa 村正. As Tadakatsu grew old, and his strength got weaker, he had his spear's handle shortened. A replication of this spear can be seen at Okazaki Castle 岡崎城.

I thought that Tokugawa Ieyasu forbade everybody to possess any Muramasa blade ! Or did this "allergy" concern only swords ?I doubt it

I also thought that the dragonfly symbolized "protection of the emperor"... wouldn't it have been a bit uncalled-for to call one's weapon "dragonfly cutter" ?Smile

Are marshal arts better than sheriff arts ??? Laughing

Puh-leeze, Hideyori... I really have hard time reading your posts... You seem to be quite enthusiastic. I don't want to be rude, but can't you make a little effort when writing, so we poor non native english speaking readers can understand clearly what you mean ? Confused

Here is a statue of Honda Tadakatsu at Okazaki Castle.

And a close-up of the blade of the replication of Tonbo-kiri that can be found there.

The bonji (Siddham script) "ka", "kirîku" and "sa" can be seen.
- ka = Jizô Bosatsu 地蔵菩薩
- kirîku = Amida Nyorai 阿弥陀如来
- sa = Kanzeon Bosatsu 観世音菩薩

and, this is a drawing of mine (When I drew it, I didn't know Tonbo-kiri... Embarassed )

Yep, a replica of the blade can indeed be found at Okazaki. I saw it when I was there in June--but I can't remember if it was in the castle itself or in the Ieyasu and Mikawa Bushi Kan, which is located on the castle grounds.

Nice illustration, Akaguma!

Hideyori--I think it has been suggested to you if you don't know what you are talking about, don't post! You are digging yourself a deeper hole. For the sake of what little patience a lot of us have left with you, please heed my earlier advice to go away and do some Japanese history reading before posting any further. Also, while you are away studying, please learn how to think twice before hitting the "submit" button.

I'm afraid he's up to post two hundred more times... until he'll get this "rônin" level he seems to be yearning for so much.

You should install it. At least it would eliminate the squares. Kanji are much more scenic than boxes. Smile

"Mr. rules, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

Depending on your computer and the OS, it *should* already be there - you just have to enable it. What are you using?

If oyu check Darcy Brockbank's site, I think he had a Muramasa yari. It should be under the sold or reference section. It hsould give you some ideas to the type of hammon and what not Muramasa used.

there are options and suggestions for at least two platforms

I have every major browser on both my (Mac and Windows) machines so I can check out html and font issues. They all work with Kanji, if you set your machine and browser up right.
I happen to have a thing for tonbo, but that is a side issue!
