I just came across a reference to this film(幕末太陽伝), made in 1957 by Kawashima Yuzo. Has anyone seen it? Do you know where I can get a copy?

Is it one of those PINKY violence films or a proto-pinky chambara eiga? Laughing

No, I haven't heard of this one. When I get back home to Japan (wow, that sounds strange considering I am in America now), I can look it up in some of my J-film books.

If anyone wants to take a stab at it now and post something, please feel free to do so.

I haven't seen it for sale through legitimate channels pressed for Region 4 or with English subtitles. It appears that the movie can also be found titled as "Shinagawa Path" and "Sun in the Last Days of the Shogunate."

Region 2 DVDs:
- CD Japan.com

- Collector's edition at Play-Asia.com

- Sazuma.com - site isn't really worksafe if you move off of this page, to my surprise.

Region 0 DVD:
- eCrater.com -- I have a bad feeling about this. 1) it's $4; 2) Chinese subtitles.

Hope this helps...

Thanks, Lycaena, I'll have to find out if I can play those on our DVD - I think it plays any region but am not sure.

It might be anything for all I know Laughing But I couldn't resist a comedy about the bakumatsu and the shishi. The reference is in the afterword to the book I was telling you about: the author was inspired to write it by this movie.

The Donald (being Ritchie not the comb over )mentions it in one of his books ,and it seems some what talky .

I am pretty sure M at Samurai DVD has a un subbed VHS copy ,i was with him years ago in a Japantown Video store and not reading Kanji asked him if it was worth renting ,vaguely i remember him saying it was comedic .

J-wikipedia says it's a cult movie.

Have you ever seen it, Shikisoku? I probably wouldn't understand much without subtitles if it's a comedy...do you think it's worth buying?

No I haven't seen it.
But "Cult movie" is my favorite kind.
I'd like to watch the movie.
