So, I am wondering if anyone is writing anything. Since there is no charge to enter, and everyone always complains about the charge, I was looking forward to a flood of entries Evil or Very Mad

I'm working on a story. I know at least one other person who is also writing a story.

The clock is ticking - approximately 2 weeks to submit your fiction entries for the contest. The more the better and all that, not to mention it is completely free to enter this year, something that was supposed to be what was keeping people from submitting, but in the end it seems that paying to enter didn't really make much difference. Hopefully we'll get some entries soon.

I have other entries but feel it is best at this point to see where this goes. Its amazing that you don't have more. Have you reached past 4?

I'm still working on my entry. I should be able to get it to you in a week or so. I'll only have this one entry. Smile

Very Happy

Hey guys, Im'a participatin' in this here writee'n event. Sorry I'm so late! I'm nearly done proofreading mine, it should be sent along soon, though.

I have a question about the whole Delphi forums account name thing, I'm not sure I have one...? I've been around here on the SA citadel for quite some time (in the shadows, where people can't see me), but I'm not sure if I have a delphi account, should I make one?

I've already posted this in the announcement thread, but no one actually ever reads those threads, so I'll post it here as well:

I have decided to extend the deadline until August 31st for entries, in order to hopefully get wider participation. Additionally, if we can get 10 entries, I'll throw in $100 for the winning story. So the more people the better - tell your friends to get writing. It is free to enter, and depending on the number of participants, you could end up with an extra $100 in your pocket. think about it.

Obviously, for the people who have already sent in entries, feel free to edit them or whatever you want - since you now have a 6 week extension.

Ah, a backhanded opportunity! That is, to say that I tried doing massive research in order to come up with ideas, came up with four or five, attempted to manage a story within each framework, failed each time and then felt justified in giving up when I realized I would never be able to make the July 15 deadline due to lack of a coherent story (mainly because of my shoddy and incomplete knowledge in every area and generally being out of practice at writing). And now you have gone and moved the deadline back! So now I have to go and read that massive travelogue and several histories and other bizarre and random bits I downloaded trying to find the perfect idea...uh, thanks, I think! Laughing

Anyway, that is by no means a promise that I'll have anything written and in proper format by August 31, only a statement of my intention to do more massive research and brainstorming (and scribbling) like I did all through June to no avail...anyway!

Cheers!

I don't think I can get my next entry in! I don't have enough research and have been advised of the perils of "wiffy" I doubt it research. I wonder if I can just post it here when I am done?

Thanks to the deadline extension, I've made a new, improved version of the entry I already sent in and will be sending this revision in. Plus I'm about halfway through a 2nd entry. Very Happy

Well, anyone who can throw together a half decent story in 35 days, please do so. I think I wrote mine from a couple years ago in about 2 hours, and then touched it up for a couple days. Granted, I didn't win, but I thought it was half decent.

So get to work!

Concerning this.I have been looking into the story(of Okuchi Castle) and find I cannot just throw something together and feel good about it, there are too many things I don't understand. I don't mind criticisms, but I have to try my best first. You have a lifetime of study to draw upon. I have about four or five months? I find that SA is not the "magic answer machine" unless you get really stuck. It seems that a great part of any good writing is the research. I would rather be respected than prolific although every story will have its detractors. Then too, I am now back at work(boo/yay!) I bet money this is your work!

The winner of the contest 2 years ago had almost zero background in Japanese history. If you actually read the entries for the past few years, I'd say less than 1 out of 4 is actual historical fiction.

I'm relieved, to say the least... that it was moved to August 31st. I crammed so much last minute before the 15th that I hardly had a flowing storyline. lol, I'm trying to find time to do all of this plotting and writing now because I'm the type that takes summer classes. >_>

My one and only submission is coming along well, though!

I've been away working on this thing awhile, and I'll have something to send in right under the wire, although I'm not convinced it's all that...anyway, this has been a great learning experience that continues every moment (I'm sure I'll learn more in the future that will make my entry look childish in retrospect). However, after 6-7 failed attempts and even more dead-end storylines, I finally finished something and I'll be sending it in very soon, after I go over it about 5 more times or so. Cheers and thanks for the exercise!

Just an afternote: I suppose that, if our fiction is posted on the SA, we'll be able to edit it if we find major errors we wish to fix, right? (I say this because I already found one glaring one I should have fixed and didn't see until the story was long ago sent off--isn't that the way of things?) Embarassed

Sure, every year we have a person or two who wants to do a re-edit.

Laurels to all who wrote a submission. This has been a great opportunity for myself. In that sense I would welcome anyone who wants to rip on my stories, its a first time for me and I want to know what worked and what did not. One of them was constantly edited and one was the first draft (the also ran). I did this intentionally to learn the value of good editing so please don't spare the lash. Confused
