Are there any pilgrimage enthusiasts out there? I first became interested in pilgrimage after reading The Tale of Genji. It started as a kind of cultural investigation and then developed into more of a spiritual activity.

So far, I've only completed the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage and the Kyoto Jusan Butsu. I'm part way through the Nara Jusan Butsu, Rakuyo Kannon and Yakushi 49, but what I'd really like to find is a Shakka pilgrimage covering some of the famous Shakyamuni images.

Until I have a lot more time, I'm pretty much limited to the Kansai area. I haven't seriously considered the Shikoku 88-temple circuit or the Kanto pilgrimages yet.

My experience of the relatively recent Rakuyo circuit is that it isn't very inspiring, and was obviously set up to generate extra revenue for small temples. In fact, circuits limited to urban areas don't really have the feel of a real pilgrimage because there is so little effort involved.
