I did a brief search through the forums and on google, etc. for some info but couldn't find anything close to what I am looking for (i.e. Herring Magistrates...). Perhaps my search abilities are not all they could be, but I couldn't find anything so I'm just going to come out and ask:

Does anybody know some good resources detailing ranks and positions of the Edo period?

I'm looking for the full spectrum. From military to administrative to clergy, etc.
Thanks in advance! Wink

Totman's Politics in the Tokugawa Bakufu, has a lot about the bakufu bureaucracy, though probably it would not get as far a herring magistrate in Hokkaido.
The article seems sensible. But I think the kanji are what is wrong.I got 2 goole hits for 鯡番所奉行, which looks like what you want.

Obenjo, there's some very useful court/military info in that article, thanks!

Bethetsu, I've yet to track down a copy of your suggested book, though I know where to find them. Smile

While I found nothing in my original search, indirect means brought me to these helpful bits within the archives:
http://www.samurai-archives.com/title.html
http://forums.samurai-archives.com/viewtopic.php?t=2784&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
While they cover Sengoku titles, I believe most were still applicable to some degree(?)...

These ranks appear to be generally on the higher end of the military and court, what about the lower end of the spectrum?
Also, of interest are civil titles along the lines of "mayor," councilman," "elder," etc.
