I was just wondering if anyone here was a fan of the Japanese mystery writer 京極 夏彦, author of the
Kyōgokudō(京極堂) Series?

I absolutely love mystery fiction of any sort, and a friend of mine was kind enough to introduce me to his writings. He's apparently a "disciple" of the Yokai specialist Shigeru Mizuki. Yokai and Japanese folklore seem to figure prominently in his series, but not in the sense of actual monsters roaming through the plot - but more like psychological impressions - which in a certain sense makes his conveyance of the atmosphere more effective.

A formal English translation of the first volume in the series will not be coming out until later this August.

However, apparently the series is so popular as to have spawned 2 Live Action movies:

Summer of Ubume: (Can't find the official site)

Moryo No Hako: http://mouryou.jp/index.html

And an Anime adaptation of the Second Volume/Movie.

[Note: I can find no translations of the two movies into English, nor can i find a complete translation of the anime series ~ the sheer density of the subject matter seems to have made it a daunting task to translate.]

Has anyone actually read any of the books by Kyogoku?

Any comments to add?

I don't believe I have, but I think I'd like to find some. It looks interesting. Smile
