Cruel Tales of Bushido (capsule review)

(Not trying to drive traffic to my blog, just wanted to share and it's all formatted with a cool photo. Read it there, comment here.)

I'd suggest waiting until its official US release by Animeigo in February under the title "Bushido-The Cruel Code Of The Samurai". I believe the Samurai Archives will be getting a credit on that disc as well...

Well, this seems like it would be a pretty good film. I see it's in black and white which I don't usually watch but Takuan you wrote a pretty good review so I might watch it when it comes out in the US.

Do you realize that by not preferring to watch b&w films, you are really missing out on some of the BEST movies ever made? Particularly in the jidai-geki genre? This is a very weird rationale. You honestly can't consider yourself a true samurai movie fan if all you watch is color stuff. Shame on you

Are you also aware that this color vs black and white issue was discussed just the other week? Pretty much everybody here has a problem with the immature and illogical way of thinking that some younger people have towards b&w films. It really is a shame.

I've watched things in black and white and it's just all the samurai movies I've seen up to now have been in color.

Well, everyone's got to start somewhere, eh? BTW, great list, takuan! There are a some of those I still haven't seen, but then again, everyone has a different favorites list. I'm sure there are very few other people besides me who include the 1913 and 1926 versions of "The Student of Prague" and the 1920 film "Der Golem" or who have a collection of Conrad Veidt films. To each his or her own, eh? Wink I've only seen one Japanese silent though; that is "A Page of Madness," an early Kinugasa film from 1926 or 27. It was beautiful though; put me right to sleep.

Cool! A space movie! I just love sci-fi sammyrai flicks. Is that really tall guy in the black armor who has an aqua lung and an electric katana in it? I think "plan 9" was the code the evil emperor dude issued to kill all the good sammyrai but a couple escaped. Just Kidding

Actually it is the movie where they resurrect the long-dead Saigo Takamori and send him on a slow rampage in a modern subdivision. Somehow, his corpse-addled Japanese came through as Swedish-accented English. And the worms, well, they were with him to the end... Great stuff!

Edit: Oh yes, about "Plan 9," that was the only surviving scrawl from a long tantrum by Shimazu Hisamitsu, wherein he devised many ways to get his title back, which he never had in the first place. Okubo Toshimichi gathered all his writings and burned them in an effort to save the literary image of Satsuma, but somehow Plan 9 survived and spelled Okubo's later doom... Just Kidding

Sorry! Just practicing! Rolling Eyes

Side note -- we've seen all those remakes of Kurosawa classics.

Did you know that some genius decided that there needed to be a remake of Plan 9? Yup. It's in the works.

I prefer the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of Plan 9.

Here is a lost still reportedly from the famous rampage scene in Plan 9 where Taira Masakado kills the ghost of himself. It was deleted because at the time it was considered excessively violent.

Tell me this is a joke, please! Down the Obenjo And I bet it'll be all slick with real special effects and a host that doesn't have a lisp and whose wife doesn't eat grass. There are just some things that, despite their obvious degraded and peeling veneer, don't really benefit from remodeling. Somehow this strikes me as the antithesis of wabi sabi. Dunno why exactly, just does. Confused

The Thing is Hollywood seems to be remaking a lot of movies these days. As far as Plan 9 goes, It's Alive and well, maybe they'll release it on Halloween to scare all The Crazies out there. Worse case it could be a Nightmare (on Elm Street) like the original. As long as the Children (of the Corn) out there haven't seen the Famed original then perhaps they'll want to plunk down a (The) Blob of money to see it and stand in (Sorority) Row to get in to the theater.

I don't mean to be a Hellraiser, but these remakes are getting out of hand. Very few of these remakes make me want to (Logan's) Run out and see them. The lack of current originality makes the Oldboy in me want to blow a Short Circuit. I guess remaking films these days is just Child's Play and easy cash, so nothing will change any time soon, sadly.

I... wow. Well I had to admit that the reason they are making a remake, I suspect, is because of twits like me who actually purchased The Plan 9 From Outerspace movie back in the day. Ergo, I imagine they believe other folks will buy into this remake.

I shoulder much of the blame for this! Crying or Very sad
