I used to be a huge Kitano fan but that stopped after Brother ,Zatoichi became his biggest film to date and despite promises of such fare as a Nobunaga Epic all we got was years of self serving Art House Crap ,Films that Takeshi liked and no one else .

Now he is back to the Kitano we all know and love ,In fact with Outrage he seems hell-bent on calling up the ghost of Fukasaku .

This is the first of a two part epic Yakuza series ,
As usual nothing special about the plot ,Dispute over gang leader ship in modern day Kobe .Still this is the stuff Yakuza fan's have not seen in quite a while .

I am not going to give to much away as far as plot but if you like the Jitsuroku style than you will love this .

Despite getting glowing review's at Cannes(not shown in competition ),Venice and Toronto the film has not attracted the interest of US Distributor's ,anyway samuraidvd has subtitled copies for 15 bucks ,not on web site yet so just e mail him .

And here is the Trailer

I own the Japanese DVD, just watched it a few weeks ago - it's freaking great. A lot of the reviews are pretty weak, but on the contrary, this one kicked ass,and I'm no Takeshi fan, never have been. But this is a two thumbs upper. I think it's a little too deep in the jitsuryoku genre and a little too Japanese for people to make any sense out of it - there is a lot of unreferenced cultural things that people not familiar with Japan might have trouble making sense of - I don't think this was made with international audiences in mind, or maybe he intentionally did that to make it pure Japanese (where brother is really geared towards an international audience). All in all, it's like a political thriller (Yakuza internal politics in this case) mixed with Reservoir Dogs.

As for "part one of two" - spoiler alert - everyone's dies a horrible and brutal death, what's part two, the two hour funeral?

That's great 2 hour funeral lol!!!.

I would imagine he will just use another Kobe Gang and the only link between the two will be Kobe itself .
That's if it does not join the long list of Kitano Projects that have never been made .

I just watched Outrage for a second time, and I just realized that the entire gang war was pretty much orchestrated by Kato in the first scene - it's so subtle I completely missed it, and I had to map out who worked for whom in an organizational chart to follow it all, but it was worth it Laughing

I just noticed, at the end of the credit roll on the DVD, there's a quick promo for "Outrage 2 - coming Fall 2011". I guess we'll see.

And here's my full review of Outrage:

Definitely a fiesta of violence, but great acting and great characters all around.

I've definitely seen real yakuza who look like these guys. The Ikemoto boss looks like a guy that was harassing women on a bus in Hayama (on a day when the Showa Emperor was visiting his summer villa). The yakuza was neatly wearing a glove over the hand with the missing finger. I'll never forget that day because it was one of the few times I heard someone shout, "Shut up, old man" in Japan.

Mizuno the VP looks like the guy I saw escorting teenage Brazilian girls at the immigration office in Yokohama, except that he had sunglasses on. Some of the others look like the yakuza that used to ride the Ikebukuro line when I rode back & forth to Takadanobaba (Waseda). Others look like the men who supervised the beach houses in Zushi and Kamakura from June to September or visited convenience stores to collect money.

An American teacher I knew told me he fell in love with a woman who worked for yakuza at a beach house. I suggested he leave Japan and surprisingly, he took off for China soon after.
