Hi everyone,

Here's a poem I wrote some time ago. I'm quite fond of it and I hope you enjoy it as well. Thanks!

HAKAMADARE AND THE FOX WOMEN

Hakamadare rode his horse until it broke and fell

As his coins flew away, a hundred sun-gilt butterflies,

each one the life of a hungry peasant, no life at all

the bandit was torn from the shaft that pinned him to his mount

Perhaps they followed the crimson trail into the clearing

or maybe they were there all along, bathing in the pool

Three bone-pale women, red of hair, blackened teeth and nails

They found him splayed, exhausted, took his rags and laid him bare

and lay themselves beside him and whispered into his ears,

Hakamadare! Are we not glorious, beautiful?

Our naked figures, pale as snow, burn hot as Summer’s kiss

Our lips are perfect hearts, our hips so subtly curved, so smooth

They will not find you here, though the woods burn furnace to ash

You are dear to us, crafty, bold, and hunted near to death

and our men, all timid mousers, are scarce and far from sight

And bandit, are we not glorious, beautiful, in truth?

They made love to him, those three, and kept him till his wounds healed

and though he begged to stay, they drove him from their sheltered glade

In later years, when he loved gold more than wood and stream,

he seldom thought upon those days, but once or twice in sleep

he dreamed of red-haired children with clever bandit eyes

This vision gave him comfort, and allayed his fear of death
