They (NHK) Finally made up their minds ,after months of juggling between Mitsuhide and Sanada NHK pick Kuroda Yoshitaka .
Good choice actually much better than the other two .

Found this out while in Japan last week. Kind of shocked, but hope NHK will get their act together.

The movie is about Shibukawa Harumi (see the article on him in the SA wiki. He altered the Mongol period Chinese calendar to fit 17th century Japan and managed to get it accepted by the court. (They had been using the same calendar for over 800 years.)
I read the book at found it a bit lacking in desciption of how he made obsevations or estimated locations while on the surveying trip. The movie will probably make up for the lack. Very Happy

I'm STILL waiting for NHK to do Genji as a Taiga drama -- pretty much one chapter an episode would be fantastic.

2014 Taiga was going to be Shimazu Yoshihiro but it was declined because NHK wanted to avoid trouble with Korea.

NHK「14年大河」ホントは「島津義弘」だった
http://news.infoseek.co.jp/article/27gendainet000177457
Quote:

"Yoshihiro is known as the famous break through in Sekigahara and the battle against Ming army in the Korean campaign."
"The exciting episode is the bottleneck. The Korean campaign is one of the climaxes. There's a record that calls him as Oni-Shimazu(Shimazu demon). It is definitely not excludable episode, but when the territorial issue provoked between Japan and Korea in August, some people in NHK raised difficulties."

Probably a smart move. But, still, a shame in a way, since I of course would have loved to see/hear more about the Shimazu.

That really sucks about Shimazu but not surprising ,going back to 2001 NHK wanted to film parts of Hojo Tokimune in South Korea and even use some Korean actors but the Korean government would not let them so they used China instead .

Tenchijin also wanted to depict the Imjin War from the point of view of those who were against it ,again Korea would not let NHK film .

As the ratings for Yae have sunk leaving NHK with three duds on the bounce NHK are seriously considering ending the franchise after next year ,Of course we here this every other year but it is interesting there is no word ,not even a rumor on a 2015 Taiga .

This is one of the strangest casts i have seen in a Taiga ,aside from Shosuke Tanihara almost all the male actors are young coming from shows like Gokusen and the GTO remake .

Many of the women actors are older than the males . again aside from Tanihara almost all the cast have never been in a historical drama before ,save some who were in Jin and Furin Kazan .

Noticed they have not cast Nobunaga ,Ieyasu and Hideyoshi yet .

I was having high hopes for this but they are dwindling .I am glad to see Saki Takaoka in it though .

I saw the Tokyo TV version of this a couple of years ago and it was really awful , aside from the low budget which is usual with their Shogatsu Dramas ,it was just non stop talking between Kuroda and Kanbei .

Naoto Takenaka will play Hideyoshi again and Yosuke Eguchi has been cast as Nobunaga .
Good call on Takenaka ,makes it worth watching at least .

Started in Japan yesterday ,Eng title is the hardly mouthwatering Strategist Kanbei .

The influence of Korean Dramas ,"oh dear !"
http://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2014/01/01/general/nhks-yearlong-drama-gunshi-kanbei-takes-cues-from-korean-success-stories/#.Usr1lvbXHw4

Oni Shimazu would have been so much better .

I saw the first episode Sunday night. I have not seen Korean dramas to compare, but I felt in places it was too jerky, both in the shots and logically. I am not a film critic to describe it correctly, but here are some examples from one section, though I may have got some details wrong or not followed the dialog well enough.

A shout goes up. The castle lookout sees a huge plume of smoke rise from a shrine village on the opposite ridge down the valley. The twelve(?)-year-old Kanbei looks out. His grandfather lives there, or at least is often there, and the shrine priest and his daughter and good friends of his. But (I think) the next time we see him he is already in the shrine village. That seems a big jump. You would expect a scene where you see him grit his teeth and rush out of the castle. Also when they escape across a bridge somehow something gets left out when the camera changes shooting angles.

Worse are the logical jerks. Why didn't the soldiers of the castle also rush there? Furthermore, even though when Kanbei gets there it must have been some time after the start of the attack with the large fire and the distance, it looks like the looting is in the first stages, with the bandits are just grabbing whatever they can find and the civilians running around confusedly. Also, as the village has been an important place in the story, one would expect a follow-up scene showing the devastation of the fire.

I don't know if I will continue to watch it much. I may if it gets better from my point of view. However, I would like to see the water attack on Takamatsu Castle. I visited there several years ago, and actually being at a place makes a big difference (http://wiki.samurai-archives.com/index.php?title=Shimizu_Muneharu)

I haven't seen it, but based on the descriptions it sounds like they have no budget and can't afford certain shots. Like how battles in Taiga drama used to be five guys riding off in clean armor, then riding back in dirty armor talking about how tough the battle was.

It seems NHK have been saving all their budget for the "Bakumatsu Women's " dramas and low balling the Sengoku dramas .

Guess they will probably recycle battle scenes from Aoi again .

Yeah, what's up with all-male Ooku drama with female shoguns and such. I watched half an episode, and apparently 90% of the men died off and so gender roles automatically switched?

.

I could not finish it either ,think i made it to Ep 6 and could not take anymore of it .

I liked the old Ooku TV series that was a big hit in the first part of the last decade . The series depicted Yoshinobu ,Tsunayoshi and Iemitsu through the eyes of the various court ladies ,it was clever ,witty ,great score and camerawork .This recent gender bender was just plain dull and flat .

Great overview of the series .

http://jdramas.wordpress.com/2014/01/06/gunshi-kanbe/

This blog casts doubts on Kanbei ,but its the comments section that is hilarious and a great debate on the pro's and cons of Taigas

Those comments are classic. I particularly enjoyed the one on Date Masamune, and oh, how true it is. The Sengoku Basara/yaoi/dojinshi crowd would make it an instant sensation.

Yes Tats i thought NHK may even go there when they cast Ryuhei Matsuda as Masamune in Tenchijin ,in so much as Tenchijin was the pretty boy Sengoku Taiga .

Another one that struck home was "They should begin by putting an end to having pacifist lead characters in these sengoku stories", which has always been a given for my summaries of each one. They're not slaughtering hundreds, even thousands, of their enemies because they want to gain control of their land/resources/power/...no, it's always because they're sensitive and caring souls who just want to end the chaos and make Japan into a place where everyone can smile and follow their dream. And those damn people in the Oda/Tokugawa/Takeda/Uesugi/Date/Toyotomi/Mori/Shimazu/etc (depending on which warlord the Taiga is focusing on) just don't understand that!
It was really carried to a ridiculous extreme in Ryomaden. Does anyone really believe (aside from Romulus) that Ryoma's goal in life was to make it possible for everyone to follow their dreams? And they just relentlessly hammered on that EVERY SINGLE EPISODE.

Totally ,especially stomach inducing was "The Helmet Of Love " in Tenchijin (good porno name though !) ,its like blahhh these people did not want to make the word a better place ,as you said they wanted to slaughter their neighbors and take their land .

An old Taiga Kunitori Monogatari had the English Title "The Land Thieves " , i wish they would get back to that thought process .

Ryoma always produces a groan ,this whole reinvention as a "Bakumatsu Wavy Gravy Deadhead " type is really annoying .
