The last picture on the previous post had the heading something like, "Location of the artillery positions of the Western Army." Is that how the anti-shogunate troops are referred to in Aizu now?

I read through the synopsis on eps 30-31 ,by no means bad but 24 through 29 seems to be the peak ,but who knows she was a nurse in the sino/russo war .

Actor Nishida Toshiyuki played Kayano Gonbe in Byakkotai drama in 1986.

1986 Kayano Gonbe

2013 Saigo Tanomo

And they both had very similar dialogue.
When Kayano Gonbe commit Seppuku, he said "I will watch what kind of country that Sat-Cho will make"

When fall of Hakodate(Ep30), Saigo Tanomo said "I will live. The people who destroyed Aizu, I will watch what kind of world(世の中)they make."

The '86 Byakkotai was still the best one, IMO; gettable subbed these days from the usual sources.

However, must say the 2013 Taiga's Katamori is the best cast of all movies so far in which he appears; he looks so much like the historic person it's almost creepy!

Even the 07 Byyakotai was pretty decent . I also really like the 1988 Goryokaku which is really great .
Yes that actor who plays Katamori is pretty spot on as far as looks .

He was Yamamoto Kakuma, Yae's brother.
The prison was in Satsuma-han mansion in Kyoto.

My local TV station airs weekly, is offset by about 1 or 2 months.. (currently on ep. 26 or so, San Francisco area).. but enjoy viewing this Taiga from Aizu's leadership perspective (specifically Matsudaira Katamori) My personal view is this period (the years leading up to the Meiji Restoration).. was one of the most important periods in Japan's history (top 5?)...if one is to consider the total social/political/military changes made not to mention the position of Japan's role on the world stage soon after the changes were made.

Thus I like to see the different perspectives of the key groups/players of the period. (Satsuma, Choshu, Shogunate, Aizu, Tosa, and Imperial Court)

As with any issue, each perspective can be different from the vantage view one is looking from. Is one correct while other is wrong? Each group involved feels (or are led to believe) their actions/views are the "righteous" path. (I should know, all of mine are)

In the 1980's NTV did a whole slew of Bakumatsu New Years Dramas .

1982 Ryoma Ga Yuku
Off to a bad start with a fat jowly Kinnosuke Yoryzuya /Nakamura .

1983 Katsu Kaishu .

1984 Shinsengumi

1985 Hana No Shogai (Ii Naosuke )

1986 Byyakotai

1987 Kiheitai (Takasuke Shinsaku )

1988 Tabaruzuka (Saigo )

1989 Goryokaku (Shogitai/Enomoto and Hijikata )

Not to be outdone other networks jumped in .

1990 Moeyoken (Hijikata ) Tokyo Tv .

1992 Von Siebold's Daughter NHK

1997 Yoshida Shoin NHK .

All the NTV dramas were broadcast on KIKU TV in Hawaii with Eng Subs ,you can find them at the usual source .

In the late 1990's NHK had a mini series about ex Shinsengumi members like Haijime Saito working as Meiji era police .

Shozan sadly is featured in the three duds
Ryoma Ga Yuku ,Katsu Kaishu and Shinsengumi .

Shinsengumi is mainly about Soji but it is the casting of Hiroki Matsukata as Kondo that ruins it ,also it ends with Ikedaya .

The rest are great but the stand out is Goryokaku with Tetsua Watari as Hijikata and Satomi Kotaro as Enomoto ,this one is magnificent .It is just in a class of its own .

I have not seen Hana No Shogai ,Moeyoken (Koji Yakusho as Hijikata ) or Von Siebold's daughter .
Byyakotai ,Tabaruzuka and Kiheitai are really great as well .

He was a figure in the 1977 NHK Taiga Kashin, based on the novel by Shiba Ryôtarô. At least he was important enough that I remember him from it. I thought it was a good one.

Bethetsu,

That is pretty good, remembering some level of details from Taiga, 35 years ago.

Added to my wish list, person I would like "next" Taiga to be centered around, Sakuma Shōzan.
(2015, as 2014 is already defined)
I know if 2013 is based on Aizu, little chance NHK to focus 2015 on Bakamatsu based period...

Sakuma was in a few episodes of Yae and his character caught my eye.
