In case anyone's interested, I've just finished reading an interesting article by David Howell, entitled "The Social Life of Firearms in Tokugawa Japan" (Japanese Studies 29:1, 2009, 65-80), and inserted the salient points into the S-A Wiki article on Teppo.

http://wiki.samurai-archives.com/index.php?title=Teppo#Edo_Period

Sorry that this doesn't contain any info on how guns were used by the authorities, or by other samurai, but, it's an interesting look at how they were used by peasants at the time.

WHAT? WE ALL KNOW THAT GUNS WERE OUTLAWED AS DISHONORABLE AND ONLY FIT FOR NINJERS AND STUFF!!

Seriously, great find--I'd seen the article, but haven't gotten to it yet. I'm reading Lidin's Tanegashima book right now, and while I don't agree with everything, it's interesting. The article will be a nice cap on the story, and nice writeup on the Wiki.

Thanks. While I have a little breathing space during the break, I thought I'd try to read some random articles that I won't get to read otherwise.

I found that a day or two AFTER we did the myth of giving up the gun podcast, which was too bad.

So...sounds like another episode to add to our list!
