I'm wondering what the capacity of a traditional yose would be in the 1880s - I'm imagining an audience of around 80 to 100, but maybe someone can help me with an exact figure.

Thank you Very Happy

You asked at just the right time, right before I talked to my FIL this week. He says that a good sized yose hall could seat up to about 300, but during that time period they would be sitting on tatami, not chairs, so you could probably get more in there. And of course there would be smaller halls as well.

Thank you (and your FIL). That is quite large. What would a kabuki theatre have held, do you know?

Something like the original Kabuki-za would have held something around 2000, the Kanamaru-za 1200 or so. There might have been even larger ones, but of course lots of smaller, more intimate venues.
