Was I not supposed to laugh uncontrollably at the idea of that guy playing Musashi? Laughing

Actually Kimura is pretty decent with a sword ,he was great in Bushi No Ichibun .

The highlight is meant to be a 10 minute sword fight .
Could have been worse .

As we are going to be deprived of Musashi's students killing Kojiro ,a 10 minute duel with an actor that can use a sword is not to bad .

He can assassinate like Assassin's Creed.

But Kimutaku's chanbara was really good.

This does look good .I love that he uses a real sword in the fight with Kojiro instead of spending 3 hours carving an oar prior to a duel to the death .Most of us would do that right !!!.

Sorry looks like he does carve the oar ,could never figure why Yoshikawa even wrote that scenario as its the most unlikely thing to do ,even worse how many people believe its true .

Still this does look well worth watching .

Watched this over the weekend. I thought it was largely excellent---probably the best Musashi adaptation in recent years. Obviously though just TV drama production quality and it was a little rushed at times and would have perhaps benefited from having it be a 3-part series instead of just two.

The action choreography is on the whole quite impressive and entertaining. Apparently, the choreographer is the same guy who choreographed the recent Rurouni Kenshin movies, and is clearly moving to the forefront of action choreographers. I had heard he had extensive background/training in Hong Kong action films/choreography, which originally had me greatly worried. It kills me to see Hong Kong-style action being transplanted into Japanese films. Fortunately, I have been pleasantly surprised by this choreographer----although he integrates some Hong Kong style into the action (a little over-stylized and too much overt wire-work at times), on the whole he is presenting action in a more under-stated, visceral manner more akin to how samurai action should be. This bodes well hopefully for future films in the genre....

Honestly I had mixed feelings about it at first. I thought the storytelling was really disjointed and jumped around too wildly between scenes. One minute Takezo and Matahachi are escaping Sekigahara, the next Takezo is getting chased around be soldiers because he's trying to tell Matahachi's mom about his shaking up with Oku and Akemi... Why didn't they just have that part of the damn story in there? Instead they just end up showing quick flashbacks of it waaaaay later, expecting us to believe that these characters matter to the story at all when they don't even really show why. Whoever directed it apparently never heard of "show, don't tell" because there is a lot of telling and very little showing. The director also seems to have ADD or something with the way scenes just leap from one thing to the next.
(Also was I the only one slightly annoyed at them shoehorning Kojiro into Sekigahara?)

During the first half of the first episode I felt like the only reason I had any idea as to what was going on was because I read the novel, and someone who didn't would be completely lost.

The action scenes were absolutely amazing. Though I've got to criticize the choreographer a little bit because the reason it's clear they were done by the same mastermind who did the Rurouni Kenshin movie was because they felt shot for shot exactly the same. I do really like him so far but he's already getting dangerously close to being a one-trick pony (hit guy in one shoulder, then other shoulder, then head, maybe break bokken on head. Every. Time.).

Negative points aside it probably is one of the better Musashi adaptations I've seen. It's fast paced (though perhaps too much so) and doesn't drag, and the action is great, you really do get a feeling of Musashi's uncontrolled brute strength in the beginning and his progress to control himself. The actors are great, at first I was skeptical of the actor chosen for Musashi, I know he's done other action movies but I wasn't sure about him being Musashi specifically, but he actually does an amazing job, and all the other characters are really well done as well.

Overall I'd say despite some kinks it's one of my new favorite historical dramas.

Takuya Kimura though a member of popsters Smap, he has trained in various sword schools since he was 5 years old .

Prior to this he was in

Nobunaga The Fool (1998)

Chushingura 1 of 47 (2001)

Bushi No Ichibun aka Love And Honor (2007) .

He was also in Wong Kar Wai's 2046 AD .

He is the reason i watched it ,i agree with everything said but i still liked it .

Nobunaga the fool was pretty goofy. The Eric Clapton soundtrack didn't help.
