(From Hokkoku Shinbun 北国新聞, Apr. 5)
Bullets from Kiri-yama Castle 切山城 in the Kiriyama 桐山 area of Kanazawa, to the NW of the center, were made of lead from Thailand, according to a recent analysis. The castle was the site of a battle between Maeda Toshiie, who was then supporting Hideyoshi, and Sassa Narimasa, then controlling Etchu, who had decided to side with Ieyasu and Oda Nobuo [or Nobukatsu]. (I could not find anything else about the battle, but presumably it was in 1584, around the time Sassa attacked Suemori Castle.) Tai lead has also been found in a lead cross from Otomo Sorin's caslte in Oita, and recently in bullets from the Nagashino battlefield and Sunpu Castle, but this is the first time it has been identified in the Hokuriku. Lead was in great demand, both for purifying the silver exported to China and for bullets, and the Europeans imported lead from China and Thailand. (http://www.hokkoku.co.jp/subpage/H20140405102.htm)
