Japanese Diplomatic Gifts of Arms and Armour to Europe During the 16th and 17th Centuries by Ian Bottomley.
Not to long ago Ian Bottomley gave a lecture at the Stibbert Museum in Florence Italy on the origin of several Japanese armors sent to Europe in the late 16th century as diplomatic gifts. Ian has just posted a written essay of his lecture, here is a link for anyone who may be interested.

Tim Screech (SOAS) has been researching related things for the last few years now. I'm not sure how much suits of armor or other martial gifts feature in his research, but he's been working on papers (or a book?) on paintings and other objects exchanged in the very same exchanges.
Also, as I think I've posted elsewhere on the forum in the past, one or two suits of samurai armor given King James I by Ieyasu can be found on display in the Tower of London (or, were on display at least in 2005):
