It's a boy! / Princess Kiko gives birth to 1st Imperial heir in 41 years
http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/20060907TDY01003.htm

Princess Kiko was born in a university professor's family.
They were living in small apartment so people thought she was really Cinderella.

But she has pretty famous greatgrandfather.
He is Ikegami Shiro, son of Aizu Samurai.
http://www.city.aizuwakamatsu.fukushima.jp/j/rekishi/jinbutsu/jin25.htm
Shiro was 12 when Satsuma-Choshu troops attacked Aizu.
Shiro wanted to join Byakkotai but they didn' allow because he was too young.
So he stayed inside of Tsuruga castle and fought against the pro-emperor troops.
After the war, he was relocated to Tonami with other Aizu samurai families.
When he was 20, he was hired as police, became chief police inspector in Osaka.
When he was 57, he became mayor of Osaka.

Rumors says that both people and Naruhito aren't so happy of this jumping-in male heir.

Anybody of you in Japan can confirm this ?

I have never heard the rumor.
The imperial family never talk about it in public.

Anything about Prince Naruhito really is rumour, because he hasn't commented. But I doubt he had a problem with his daughter becoming empress, and he's generally pissed off with his brother, the "Moustached-Avenger". So he might feel that way.

As for the Japanese people as a whole, it's impossible to know what they think yet. A minority will be pleased, another smaller group will be disappointed - it's difficult to know what the larger portion will think. They might not care.

I think Mikasanomiya has commented about this issue on a magazine.

Ikegami Shiro has quite an amazing life story.
Isn't it ironic that a descendant of the Aizu warriors will become emperor? I think so.

Is the current emperor a decendent of any samurai family?
