Just looked her up--she's probably better suited to jidai geki with her features than the ones I mentioned (well, maybe not Yonekura and Koike, but it's debatable) but those 4 certainly win the Sengoku Bikini Contest....

Kimura Yoshino and Iijima Naoko are two actresses with fairly traditional-looking appearances. Kimura Yoshino has been in historical roles a couple times, but I can't recall ever seeing Iijima Naoko in one.

Yasu Megumi (or "Cheap Megumi" as my buddies and I call her) would be good in a wicked, vindictive role, with her lopsided smile.

I can think of plenty of actresses and models, but it's difficult to come up with male actors that would be appropriate for a jidai geki that haven't already done it...

Beat Takeshi was pretty good in Gohatto, but I really didn't like his Zatouichi. Too creepy, with none of Katsu Shintarou's affability and humanity.

Rocker Hotei Tomoyasu could make a pretty intimidating swordsman (tall and scary-looking). I can't recall if I've ever seen him in anything.

The dude who was GTO in the movie, he played Nobunaga in "Toshiie to Matsu"--he was pretty good. Married to the girl who played Matsu, IIRC.

He played the bad ass swordfighter-ronin in "Samurai Fiction". He was also in a Yakuza movie called Shin Jingi naki tatakai - OK movie with a great soundtrack and cinematography - Tarantino stole some ideas from that for the first Kill Bill.

Iijima Naoko's sortof up there agewise these days, but she could certainly do a historical role justice.

I was just feeling a little guilty that this slid into a J-idol discussion, but then I thought about it--if NHK really wants to raise ratings, then forget the boy bands, and get more hot women on the shows. Teenage girls aren't going to watch "Fuurin Kazan" just because Gackt is in it. However, teenage boys will watch "Oda Nobunaga 43: Nobunaga calls Hideyoshi 'Saru' and burns Mt. Hiei--hilarity ensues" if Koike Eiko or MEGUMI or Sato Eriko is featured in a role. Boys are already a little better predisposed to a samurai storyline--you're just giving them that extra little reason to watch. Your average teenage girl could probably care less about Shinsengumi, and isn't going to watch just because Katori Shingo is on. (Hell, he or another SMAP member are on everything else, so it's not like they've got to watch NHK to see him).

And of course, old geezers would watch the J-idol gals also.

He also played the same swordfighter-ronin in Aka Kage (at least for the first few minutes of the film).

He was in the first few minutes of the film (when Aka Kage was dressed as a samurai)...it was the 'slow motion bee swarm' scene.

Fair enough! Be sure your troops are properly armored before "invading her castle," though. Wink

Right about now Tony will come around and chide me for not reading her bio yet, but I'll get to it someday. I actually have a good bit of respect for her...and she's easy on the eyes Twisted Evil

I'm thinking "Spray Guard Keyboard Covers" might make a good cottage industry on the forums.
